About the Role
Lila Sciences is seeking a Staff/Principal Engineer, Search & Retrieval (Enterprise AI) to lead the development of systems that enable scientists and agents to query scientific knowledge, including literature, patents, documents, and experimental data. This role involves building Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) over unstructured text and a scientific knowledge graph, ensuring a unified retrieval platform for enterprise customers with enforced tenancy.
Responsibilities
- Provide technical leadership across platform engineering, infrastructure, AI/ML, and scientific teams.
- Define the shared retrieval foundation architecture, influencing scientific workloads company-wide.
- Build a scientific knowledge graph from literature and experimental records, owning its retrieval and fusion with other search methods.
- Develop the autonomous research loop, including query planning, retrieval, and traceable reasoning.
- Own the end-to-end retrieval pipeline and evaluation harness.
- Own the pipeline for ingesting and extracting information from various scientific data types into semantically searchable evidence.
Requirements
- 8+ years of software development experience, including production ownership of a search, retrieval, RAG, or knowledge graph system.
- Production experience building semantic search, including embedding models, vector indexes, hybrid retrieval, and reranking.
- Track record in high-growth environments.
- Ability to describe retrieval quality measurement and regression detection.
- Hands-on coding in Python and modern backend frameworks (FastAPI, async Python).
- Experience with modern cloud-native architectures (Kubernetes, Terraform, AWS).
- Strong cross-functional communication and architectural influence skills.
- BS, MS, or Ph.D. in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent experience.
