About the Role
As a Battery Modeling Engineer, you will build data and degradation models to understand battery aging in real-world conditions. You will combine software engineering, data science, and semi-empirical degradation modeling, transforming telemetry and cell-level testing data into trusted datasets and models that predict capacity fade, resistance growth, and remaining useful life. This role is hybrid, at the intersection of software, data science, and battery science, owning degradation analytics end-to-end and helping establish Base’s cell characterization lab. Your work will directly influence fleet operations and long-term performance planning.
Responsibilities
- Build and validate semi-empirical degradation models for calendar and cycle aging, capacity fade, and resistance growth for fleet cells.
- Help found and set up Base’s cell characterization lab, including defining test plans, selecting equipment, and establishing processes for reliable aging data generation.
- Analyze fleet- and device-level data to understand degradation drivers like temperature, state of charge, and usage patterns, validating model predictions against real-world behavior.
- Translate model outputs into tools and insights for engineering, fleet, and markets teams to guide battery operations.
- Write production-quality Python and SQL code with associated tests, documentation, and monitoring to ensure model trustworthiness.
- Track model history and communicate changes effectively across the organization.
Requirements
- Background in Chemistry, Battery Physics, electrochemistry, materials science, or chemical engineering.
- PhD in physics modeling or battery chemistry preferred.
- World-class ownership mindset, owning outcomes not just tasks.
- Hands-on experience with battery modeling, ideally semi-empirical or physics-informed degradation models for lithium-ion cells.
- Strong software and data skills, with proficiency in Python and SQL (or equivalent).
- Familiarity with cell testing and characterization (cycling, HPPC, EIS, or similar).
- Excitement about building a lab from the ground up.
- Experience with field or fleet data from deployed energy storage, EVs, or consumer electronics is a plus.
