About the Role
Avant is a member-owned mutual organization dedicated to supporting doctors through challenging career moments, with data being central to its operations. The company has established data platform foundations and is now focused on maturing its data, analytics, and AI capabilities. This role involves taking ownership of the target data architecture, assessing the current environment, and developing a roadmap for evolution, simplification, and improvement within an established Azure and Databricks environment. The position requires setting standards, making key design decisions, and ensuring the platform's scalability, security, resilience, and cost-effectiveness in a regulated setting. It emphasizes close collaboration with various teams to ensure the technology delivers trusted data, actionable insights, and improved business decision-making.
Responsibilities
- Own and evolve the data architecture, including the target data architecture and roadmap for the data platform (primarily Azure and Databricks).
- Assess the current environment and technical debt, establishing a pragmatic transition roadmap.
- Act as the design authority for data, setting standards and making key architectural decisions.
- Ensure the architecture balances scalability, performance, resilience, security, and cost.
- Simplify the data and analytics technology landscape over time.
- Define modelling standards across the medallion architecture, including reusable data assets and semantic layers.
- Own conceptual and logical models across key domains (member, product, claims, finance).
- Define ingestion, transformation, and integration patterns across the platform and downstream systems.
- Champion strong modelling, schema design, and engineering practices.
- Provide independent architectural assurance over solutions delivered by delivery partners.
- Review and challenge designs, frameworks, and technical debt.
- Lead the transition of architecture ownership and knowledge in-house.
- Coach engineers and analysts on data architecture and modelling practices.
- Embed data classification, access, privacy, retention, and security requirements into architectural decisions.
- Design for lineage, data quality, and access controls supporting APRA and Privacy Act obligations.
- Help establish an architecture that supports the responsible use of AI.
- Represent data architecture at the Architecture Review Board and provide input to major programmes.
- Explain complex architectural choices and trade-offs to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Collaborate with business leaders, delivery teams, risk partners, and technology teams to align architectural decisions with business priorities.
Requirements
- 10+ years of experience in data and technology, with at least five years as a Data Architect or Solution Architect.
- Strong hands-on experience with Databricks, or deep experience with comparable platforms like Snowflake or BigQuery, with the ability to apply expertise to Databricks.
- Strong cloud and data architecture expertise, ideally within Azure.
- Experience owning and maturing an established data platform, focusing on optimization and simplification.
- Strong data modelling capability, including conceptual and logical modelling, dimensional or Data Vault approaches, semantic layers, and advanced SQL.
- Experience working with consultancies or systems integrators, including reviewing and challenging their technical designs.
- Strong stakeholder management skills, with the ability to maintain a collaborative and pragmatic approach while holding architectural positions.
- Experience working across multidisciplinary data, analytics, engineering, and governance teams.
- Strong focus on using data architecture to enable better analytics, insight, and business decision-making.
- Tertiary qualification in computer science, information technology, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- Experience within financial services, insurance, or health, particularly in an APRA-regulated environment, is highly regarded.
- Experience with Unity Catalog, Microsoft Purview, data products/data mesh, Terraform, CI/CD for data platforms, or Databricks Asset Bundles is advantageous.
