About the Role
The Computational Design Engineer will own the look, feel, and functionality of the product, translating designs into production code. This role combines design and engineering, requiring the creation of product and 3D/site design tools using React, TypeScript, Rhino, Grasshopper, and Python. The engineer will be responsible for designing and building the user-facing product, ensuring clarity and defensibility for client decisions.
Responsibilities
- Design and build spatial and 3D design tools, including parametric logic, site layouts, 3D views, and CAD outputs.
- Own product design end-to-end, from user flows and interfaces to final implementation.
- Develop the front end using React and TypeScript to production standards.
- Create and maintain a design system for consistency across all product surfaces.
- Translate complex data, maps, and workflows into clear, actionable client-facing screens and reports.
- Develop flagship demos, the company website, and client deliverables.
- Engage with clients to understand decision-making processes and incorporate feedback into product development.
Requirements
- Experience designing and engineering product and 3D/site design tools.
- Proficiency in React and TypeScript for front-end development.
- Experience with Rhino, Grasshopper, and Python for geometry and design.
- Ability to design systems rather than one-off solutions.
- Demonstrated taste and a commitment to high quality.
- Experience shipping production front-end code.
- Experience in a leading architecture, design, or engineering practice, or a product company building design/spatial tools.
- Proven ability to simplify complex tools for non-technical users.
- Portfolio showcasing both design thinking and shipped products.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with engineers and meet engineering standards.
- Interest in AI, software, and the built world.
- Experience with masterplanning, site planning, or massing studies (bonus).
- Experience with CAD and drawing output (DXF, layered drawings) (bonus).
- Experience designing data-heavy, map-based, or AI products (bonus).
- An eye for brand and product design (bonus).
- Experience as a founder or first designer at an early-stage company (bonus).
