About the Role
Adaptyv is building an automated lab for AI agents to run biology experiments, aiming to bridge the gap between AI's experimental design capabilities and the physical execution of those experiments. This role is crucial for establishing and operating a new, high-throughput protein engineering lab in London, supporting partners like Anthropic and Boltz, and providing services to UK biotech companies.
Responsibilities
- Lead the lab fit-out, managing the space from shell to a working laboratory, including benching, ventilation, power, cold storage, extraction, and safety systems.
- Install and commission the instrument fleet, coordinating delivery, installation, qualification, and handover of equipment.
- Build the lab operating infrastructure, including inventory, procurement, shipping, cold chain, maintenance, service contracts, chemical handling, and waste management.
- Own lab safety and compliance, establishing processes, documentation, risk assessments, notifications, and permits for the London site.
- Build and manage the lab operations team, hiring and overseeing personnel responsible for facility, equipment, and logistics.
- Manage day-to-day lab operations, focusing on uptime, throughput, inventory, maintenance, safety, and continuous improvement once production begins.
Requirements
- Experience building or expanding a laboratory, including leading a fit-out, site move, major equipment installation, or new laboratory launch.
- Deep hands-on lab operations experience, preferably in a high-throughput, automation-heavy biotech, life-science, or technical environment.
- Strong life-sciences background with a degree and/or significant professional experience in biology, biochemistry, bioengineering, or a related field.
- Understanding of scientific workflows and the importance of details like contamination control, cold chain, calibration, and equipment reliability.
- Experience owning laboratory safety, permitting, and compliance, with the ability to ensure a new UK site is compliant from day one or to quickly learn local requirements.
- Strong vendor and contractor management skills, comfortable managing manufacturers, service engineers, contractors, suppliers, and logistics providers.
- Highly operational mindset with the ability to build systems, identify problems early, track details, and ensure lab functionality as complexity and throughput increase.
- Comfort working at startup pace with rapidly changing priorities and a small team.
- Proficiency in using AI tools for work, including Adaptyv's internal software.
- Must be based in London or willing to relocate.
