About the Role
Boson AI is seeking MScAC students for an 8-month applied research internship starting in May 2027. Interns will work on real-time speech and multimodal AI projects, contributing directly to models and products. The internship is based in Toronto with a hybrid schedule.
Responsibilities
- Build pipelines to collect, segment, transcribe, and annotate audio data using unsupervised and semi-supervised methods.
- Design benchmarks and automatic metrics for expressive, multilingual, and conversational speech, voice cloning, and speech recognition.
- Work on the data pipeline for video generation, including collection, filtering, and synthesis.
- Optimize the training process on a large GPU cluster for speed and robustness.
- Improve the speed and cost-efficiency of serving streaming speech and video models.
- Develop declarative dialog frameworks for agents that separate workflow state from language generation.
- Implement theory of mind for agents to model user state of mind and implied needs.
- Utilize reinforcement learning to improve agents from real call traces.
- Develop full-duplex models for speech and audio-video that handle interruptions and backchannels.
- Ensure avatar behavior in audio-video includes real-time listening and reactions.
Requirements
- Enrolled in the MScAC program at the University of Toronto.
- Strong programming skills in Python.
- Strong programming skills in C++, CUDA, or Triton for systems projects.
- Solid foundations in machine learning and deep learning.
- Hands-on experience in PyTorch or JAX.
- Careful experimental practice: design experiments, measure what matters, and report results honestly.
- Available for the full 8-month internship.
- Able to work from our Toronto office on a hybrid schedule.
