About the Role

Beacon Biosignals is seeking a Director of Product Design to lead and grow its Product Design function. This role involves overseeing the design of hardware, mobile apps, web applications, print materials, and internal business processes. The Director will lead a team of three senior product designers, set the vision for design at Beacon, and plan for the function's growth while remaining hands-on with design work.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and coach a team of three senior product designers, fostering their growth and career development.
  • Craft, iterate, and execute a vision for product design at Beacon, translating it into a growth plan for the function.
  • Operate as a player-coach, setting standards and demonstrating best practices through direct design work.
  • Own prioritization across all design surfaces, including device, mobile, web, print, and business processes.
  • Build cross-functional connections with teams such as Device Engineering, Platform, Clinical Operations, and Quality.
  • Establish processes, standards, and shared systems for design scalability, including a coherent design language and reusable patterns.
  • Ensure rigorous and well-documented design contributions for regulated products, partnering with Quality and Regulatory on usability and human factors.
  • Own the headcount plan, budget, and vendor relationships for the design function.
  • Develop a deep understanding of all user groups, including patients, clinical staff, healthcare providers, site teams, and sponsors.
  • Build a research practice to maintain current understanding of user needs.
  • Develop a deep understanding of Beacon's internal operations to support internal teams.
  • Anticipate and address design debt, inconsistencies, and unowned experience problems proactively.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of product design experience.
  • 4+ years of experience managing and developing designers.
  • Experience building or substantially maturing a design function.
  • A portfolio spanning both hardware and software experiences.
  • Experience and familiarity working in the medical device space, clinical diagnostics, real-world-data, pharma/biotech, or related fields.
  • Experience working in a regulated industry and navigating the tension between iterative design and design controls.
  • Familiarity with usability engineering and human factors practice (e.g. IEC 62366, FDA human factors guidance) is a strong plus.
  • Experience coaching senior individual contributors and providing respected feedback.
  • Comfortable being hands-on without defaulting to it.
  • Experience designing service and business process experiences.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to align partners around decisions, tradeoffs, and evolving plans.
  • Demonstrated bias towards simplicity and imposing structure at the right time.
  • Comfortable working in a highly asynchronous remote work environment.
