About the Role

Amgen is seeking an Executive Director, Digital Product Management - Research to serve as the senior digital technology leader for Research. This role will translate Research strategy into a technology, data, and AI agenda to accelerate scientific discovery and create a durable advantage in medicine discovery. The Executive Director will own the technology environment for Research, lead a talented organization, and partner with scientific leaders to ensure dependable capabilities for faster and better science.

Responsibilities

  • Set and evolve the multi-year Research Technology, Data & AI strategy in partnership with Research, linking capability investments to the Research portfolio, scientific priorities, and measurable outcomes.
  • Serve on the Research Leadership Team as a strategic advisor and decision-maker, bringing technology and data insight to portfolio choices, operating plans, capital decisions, and risk discussions.
  • Own portfolio prioritization and investment recommendations across the function, balancing scientific value, urgency, adoption, technical dependencies, risk, cost, and organizational capacity.
  • Establish clear outcomes, OKRs and value measures; use evidence to redirect investment, retire low-value solutions and scale what demonstrably advances the science.
  • Own the technology foundation that enables Research scientists to do their best work: benchtop and instrument-adjacent technology, electronic lab notebooks, LIMS, and integrated scientific workflows.
  • Deliver reliable, scalable products that scientists want to use, improve workflows, and demonstrate measurable value.
  • Lead the modernization and integration of scientific data workflows from capture at source through analysis, reuse, and decision-making, with a strong emphasis on data quality, metadata, terminology, and fit-for-purpose governance.
  • Build a coherent portfolio of governed, reusable data products that connect experiments, observations, models, and knowledge across Research, making data discoverable, trustworthy, and ready for analytical reuse.
  • Advance digital capabilities across the Research portfolio, including disease understanding, target selection, small molecule discovery, large molecule discovery, DNA-encoded libraries, and antibody-drug conjugates, while enabling productive collaboration across scientific domains.
  • Ensure platforms and workflows are designed around scientist needs and continuously improve the end-to-end user experience.
  • Lead and develop a high-performing organization spanning research informatics, laboratory and benchtop technology, digital products, and scientific data enablement.
  • Build strong partnerships with Research scientific leaders, the Technology and AI & Data organizations, and external collaborators; resolve cross-functional dependencies and material trade-offs.
  • Demonstrate robust technology investment discipline across platform rationalization, build-versus-buy decisions, and managing technical debt.
  • Set a high bar for product and delivery excellence: clear problem framing, scientist co-design, strong architecture, rigorous vendor management, reliable operations, adoption, lifecycle management, and realized value.
  • Create a culture that combines scientific curiosity with accountability; one that moves quickly, learns from evidence, anticipates risk, and delivers dependable services to laboratories and research teams.
  • Communicate strategy, investment decisions, performance, risks, and opportunities clearly to executive audiences, translating complex scientific and technical choices into decisive action.

Requirements

  • Doctorate degree & 6 years of technology experience OR Master’s degree & 10 years of technology experience OR Bachelor’s degree & 12 years of technology experience AND 6 years of managerial experience directly managing people and/or leadership experience leading teams, projects, programs or directing the allocation of resources.
  • 5+ years of progressive leadership experience, including direct leadership of senior leaders and/or responsibility for a substantial, multi-disciplinary organization.
  • Experience leading technology, data, digital, informatics or computational capabilities in a research-intensive, life sciences environment.
  • Scientific credibility that they can earn the trust of scientists and enable existing assumptions to be challenged.
  • Understanding of drug discovery research lifecycle and builds credibility with scientists across relevant disciplines, such as small molecules, biologics, DELs, ADCs, disease biology, or translational science.
  • Experience setting multi-year strategy in partnership with business functions and leading enterprise-scale changes across laboratory technology, scientific software, data platforms, scientific workflows, or research informatics.
  • Experience in creating and scaling scientific data products, FAIR data practices, metadata and terminology capabilities, and integrated data-to-insight workflows.
  • Technology and data judgment, with the ability to make informed decisions across cloud platforms, architecture, laboratory systems, data engineering, analytics, and vendor ecosystems.
  • Ability to influence senior executives, lead through ambiguity, resolve consequential cross-functional trade-offs and create alignment without relying solely on formal authority.
  • Executive communication and storytelling skills, with the ability to translate complex scientific, technical and investment choices into clear recommendations and action.
  • Experience in biotechnology, pharmaceutical research or another highly regulated, technology-intensive environment strongly preferred.
