About the Role
The Roofing Estimator prepares accurate takeoffs and pricing for new roof, reroof and waterproofing projects across ICI flat roofing, working from tender drawings and specifications. This role involves collaboration with building owners, consultants, general contractors, and suppliers, and provides support to the project management team for contract questions and extras. The estimator also collaborates with ownership on special projects and represents them when needed. Success in this role is defined by accurate numbers, thorough drawing checks, and proactive identification and communication of errors.
Responsibilities
- Prepare accurate estimates and takeoffs of materials, labour and equipment for roofing projects based on tender drawings and specifications.
- Identify labour, material and time requirements by studying proposals and blueprints.
- Examine drawings for conformity and errors and raise issues before pricing is submitted.
- Review contracts, quotations and CCDC documents.
- Liaise with building owners, consultants, general contractors and suppliers throughout the tender process.
- Support the project management team in resolving contract discrepancies that arise after signing, including extra claims.
- Maintain historical information on quoted and completed projects to keep pricing consistent.
- Research materials and costs, and secure supplier contracts when required for projects or requested by ownership.
- Work closely with ownership on special projects and represent ownership when required.
- Perform other duties as required.
Requirements
- Minimum of 2 years of roofing estimating experience, including ICI (commercial, industrial and institutional) flat roofing.
- Working knowledge of built-up tar and gravel and modified bitumen systems (asphalt, torch applied and cold applied).
- Experience estimating new roof, reroof and waterproofing projects.
- Strong takeoff skills for materials, labour and equipment from tender drawings and specifications.
- Ability to review contracts, quotations and CCDC documents.
- Knowledge of single ply and synthetic membrane systems is an asset.
- Ability to own mistakes quickly and communicate corrective actions.
- Willingness to share knowledge, including historical pricing and supplier information.
- Ability to make sound decisions independently.
- Proactive in identifying root causes of errors and gaps.
- Clear and professional communication with stakeholders.
- Comfortable representing ownership when required.
