About the Role
Risk Engineering builds the systems that decide which subscription orders Grover approves, declines, reviews or verifies, in real time, across four markets and for both consumers and businesses. As a Senior Software Engineer, you report to the Engineering Manager, Risk Engineering, and join a small, senior team that owns its services end to end. You work closely with risk analysts, data scientists, and product to grow approval rate while keeping fraud and defaults in check.
Responsibilities
- Build our risk decisioning platform, including the rule engine, experiments, and decision APIs (FastAPI, GraphQL federation).
- Develop new risk products, such as dynamic pricing and counter offers, from design to production.
- Integrate with credit bureaus and identity, fraud, and AML providers, ensuring reliability.
- Implement event-driven flows on Kafka for decisions, manual review, and verification processes, handling retries, duplicates, and race conditions.
- Create tools for risk analysts, including the manual review experience and an LLM-powered risk assistant on AWS Bedrock.
- Ensure reliability and observability of services through Datadog monitoring, on-call rotations, and runbooks, while removing legacy dependencies.
Requirements
- 5+ years of backend engineering experience.
- Proficiency in Python in a production environment.
- Comfort working 90% on backend and 10% on frontend.
- Product thinking and mindset, considering end-user and business impact.
- Experience owning services in production and managing their full lifecycle.
- Comfort participating in an on-call rotation.
- Champion of testing, comfortable writing unit and end-to-end tests.
- Hands-on experience with event-driven systems (Kafka or similar).
- Hands-on experience with PostgreSQL.
- Experience designing REST and/or GraphQL APIs.
- Experience integrating third-party APIs.
- Comfort with AWS, Docker, and Kubernetes.
- Ability to work with Terraform.
- Experience in cross-functional collaboration, explaining technical trade-offs simply.
- Ability to remain calm when priorities shift.
