About the Role

As Senior Tax Advocate, you will lead research, policy development, and advocacy on complex and emerging federal and state tax issues. You will translate technical legislation, economic developments, and member insights into clear policy positions, persuasive submissions, and practical communications, representing CA ANZ with government agencies, policymakers, regulators, and industry bodies.

Responsibilities

  • Lead analysis of tax legislation, rulings, budget measures, and economic developments to help set priorities and shape CA ANZ’s response.
  • Develop evidence-based policy positions, formal submissions, proposals, presentations, and thought leadership on significant tax issues.
  • Build trusted relationships and represent CA ANZ with the Australian Taxation Office, Treasury, the Tax Ombudsman, and the Board of Taxation.
  • Draw on members’ expertise to identify practical issues, test policy positions, and ensure advocacy reflects member experience.
  • Partner with advocacy organisations and teams across CA ANZ to align priorities, build coalitions, and coordinate action.
  • Translate complex tax and policy issues into authoritative, accessible content for briefings, newsletters, digital channels, webinars, and presentations.

Requirements

  • At least seven to ten years’ experience in the tax profession, with broad exposure across multiple tax areas and strong contemporary technical knowledge.
  • Highly developed analytical skills, with the ability to assess the economic, fiscal, distributional, implementation, and technical implications of tax proposals.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including experience producing persuasive briefs, submissions, advice, and presentations.
  • Proven ability to build strategic relationships and credibly represent organisational positions in senior government, regulatory, or public forums.
  • Strong strategic thinking, initiative, and sound judgement, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver high-quality outcomes with autonomy.
  • A collaborative, curious, and adaptable approach, grounded in integrity and a commitment to balancing member needs with the public interest.
  • Experience using digital tools, data, and AI-enabled insights to strengthen analysis and decision-making.
  • A law degree is required, ideally complemented by tax-related postgraduate study, national tax experience, and/or a CA designation.
