About the Role
Base’s Risk & Trading team turns a fleet of distributed batteries and the households we serve into a power business that makes money. As a Market Analyst, you’ll know how much Base is earning, where it could lose money, and how it will make money in the next market. You’ll own P&L reporting and risk tracking across our battery fleet and retail operations. You’ll build pricing models, recommend hedges, and work with cross-functional teams to determine how Base makes money in new markets. This role suits someone with a few years of experience in power markets, retail energy, or a related analytical field, offering ownership of real decisions early.
Responsibilities
- Build a bottoms-up retail pricing model for PJM, building upon the ERCOT model.
- Integrate PJM into the risk system and P&L reporting to track margin and supply procurement.
- Identify new market opportunities and collaborate with Finance, Growth, and Legal & Policy teams.
- Recommend changes to Base’s hedging strategy in ERCOT and PJM, and track exposure against risk limits.
Requirements
- Energy markets knowledge, including wholesale market basics in ERCOT and PJM, power buying, hedging, and settlement.
- Understanding of retail pricing and operations.
- Commercial sense to understand retail offer profitability, costs, margins, and risks.
- Risk and statistics knowledge, including thinking in distributions and understanding tail-heavy power prices.
- Proficiency in Python (or another language) for building reports and models.
- Ability to pull data using SQL.
- Capacity to work through problems independently.
- Experience at a retail energy provider, utility supply desk, or trading middle office is a plus.
