About the Role

The Off-Search Online Sourcing team builds real-time ad retrieval systems for Amazon's non-Search surfaces, utilizing embedding models and approximate nearest neighbor indexes to serve hundreds of millions of ads in milliseconds. You will design and deliver low-latency services, model serving infrastructure, and distributed indexing pipelines that determine which ads shoppers see, enriched with delivery speed, locality, and return signals to ensure ads surface products that can reach customers quickly. This team rapidly experiments with new models, indexes, and signals in production through A/B experiments to grow both advertiser results and shopper engagement, partnering with applied scientists to bring new retrieval models from research into production.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop high-throughput, low-latency services that retrieve and enrich ad candidates within strict latency budgets across Amazon's non-Search surfaces
  • Build and scale model serving infrastructure for real-time embedding inference, partnering with applied scientists to bring new retrieval models into production
  • Develop distributed indexing pipelines that build and refresh large approximate nearest neighbor search indexes across hundreds of millions of ads
  • Deliver real-time fulfillment signals — delivery speed, locality, return eligibility — that improve ad filtering and ranking quality for shoppers
  • Launch new retrieval models and indexes behind A/B experiments, analyze results, and use data to decide what ships to production
  • Deliver features end to end — from design and code reviews through implementation, deployment, monitoring, and on-call operations
  • Improve operational excellence through caching, graceful degradation, monitoring, and root-cause analysis
  • Mentor peers through code and design reviews, helping raise the engineering quality bar across the team

Requirements

  • 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
  • 2+ years of non-internship design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
  • 1+ years of software development engineer or related occupational experience
  • 1+ years of designing and developing large-scale, multi-tiered, multi-threaded, embedded or distributed software applications, tools, systems, and services using: C#, C++, Java, or Perl experience
  • 1+ years of Object Oriented Design experience
  • Experience programming with at least one software programming language
  • 3+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience
  • Experience building low-latency, high-throughput distributed services
  • Experience with search or vector retrieval systems, such as Lucene, Elasticsearch or approximate nearest neighbor indexes
  • Experience serving machine learning or generative AI models in production
  • Experience with large-scale data processing, such as Spark
  • Background in advertising technology, recommendation systems or e-commerce platforms
