About the Role

Canada Rocket Company is building a sovereign launch capability for Canada, and precision machining is critical for our E-1 engine. We are seeking a Principal Machinist to establish and operate our machine shop at our head office in Etobicoke. This hands-on role involves programming, operating CNC machines, and collaborating with designers to optimize part production. You will report to the Head of Propulsion and work closely with various teams, supervising test engineers and shop technicians.

Responsibilities

  • Commission CNC mills, lathes, manual machines, and supporting equipment.
  • Support shop layout and specify infrastructure, including power, air, coolant, and metrology.
  • Establish shop practices for safety, housekeeping, tool management, and Controlled Goods handling.
  • Manage the shop’s equipment, tooling, and consumables plan.
  • Program and operate CNC machines to produce propulsion and vehicle parts.
  • Utilize manual mills and lathes for specific tasks like one-offs and fixtures.
  • Finish-machine interfaces and critical features on additively manufactured parts.
  • Inspect work to ensure parts meet drawing specifications and quality demands.
  • Develop methods for machining difficult parts, including fixturing, tooling, and process sequencing.
  • Troubleshoot machining, tooling, and process problems.
  • Collaborate with designers on manufacturability, suggesting design changes to reduce cost and risk.
  • Review drawings and tolerances for producibility.
  • Supervise test engineers and shop technicians involved in tooling manufacturing and shop operations.
  • Train team members in safe machine operation and machining practices.
  • Prioritize work with the Head of Propulsion to ensure critical hardware is produced first.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of professional machining experience, including tool and die or similar demanding precision work.
  • Hands-on CNC programming and operation experience, from setup to finished part.
  • Experience machining a range of materials, including difficult alloys, and holding tight tolerances.
  • Ability to read drawings and GD&T.
  • Proficiency in inspecting own work using precision measurement tools.
  • Proven problem-solving skills with a track record of making difficult parts and taking ownership.
  • Willingness to collaborate with designers and engineers, providing feedback on manufacturability.
  • Ability to work with Controlled Goods and obtain a Controlled Goods Program security assessment.
  • Comfort operating with ambiguity and limited infrastructure in a fast-paced program.
