About the Role

depthfirst is seeking an Infrastructure Software Engineer to build, scale, and secure the infrastructure powering the company's operations. This role involves managing cloud and Kubernetes environments, production services for sandboxes, and orchestrating compute resources. The position combines deep infrastructure expertise with hands-on software engineering, focusing on designing and developing infrastructure services, improving system reliability and efficiency, and enhancing security.

Responsibilities

  • Build and operate cloud infrastructure and Kubernetes clusters supporting production systems and engineering teams.
  • Design and develop production sandbox management and orchestration services, including APIs and distributed coordination.
  • Improve workload scheduling, autoscaling, and capacity management.
  • Strengthen infrastructure security through workload isolation, access controls, network policies, and secure configuration.
  • Improve performance and cost efficiency by reducing startup latency, increasing resource utilization, and addressing system bottlenecks.
  • Build observability and operational tooling.
  • Debug production issues across service code, Kubernetes, Linux, networking, and cloud infrastructure, and implement durable fixes.
  • Improve infrastructure as code, deployment pipelines, and upgrade processes.

Requirements

  • Experience building and operating cloud infrastructure and production systems in infrastructure engineering, platform engineering, SRE, or a similar role.
  • Strong hands-on knowledge of Kubernetes, including workload scheduling, networking, resource management, scaling, and troubleshooting.
  • Familiarity with different deployment architectures/concepts such as SaaS, Bring-Your-Own-Cloud, air-gapped, etc.
  • Strong software engineering skills in a language such as Go, with experience designing, building, and maintaining production services.
  • Experience developing distributed systems, including handling concurrency, retries, partial failures, and resource lifecycle management.
  • A solid understanding of Linux, containers, networking, and cloud security fundamentals.
  • Experience with infrastructure as code, CI/CD, and production observability.
  • Ability to reason about tradeoffs between reliability, security, performance, cost, and operational complexity.
  • Ownership from design and implementation through deployment and ongoing operation.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work through ambiguous problems with other engineers.
  • Based in or willing to relocate to San Francisco.
