About the Role

Stand is reimagining high-net-worth personal lines insurance for a world where the old playbook doesn't work anymore. You'll be executing our underwriting strategy for a high-net-worth personal lines book including complex homes, unique exposures, and CAT risks. You will work directly with brokers, marketing, mitigation, and engineering teams to evaluate risks others won't touch, structure creative terms, and deliver an experience that makes us the easiest carrier to work with. This is hands-on underwriting with real autonomy; you'll own your book, make decisive calls on complex submissions, and help shape how we leverage technology to get better at the craft without losing the human judgment that matters.

Responsibilities

  • Become the underwriter brokers call when they have challenging CAT-exposed properties, unique collections, non-standard liability exposures.
  • Develop creative, solution-oriented approaches that balances client needs with sound risk selection.
  • Grow your assigned book to premium and policy targets while maintaining strict risk quality standards.
  • Demonstrate improved selection through thoughtful terms, appropriate pricing, and knowing when to walk away.
  • Keep underwriting files audit-ready with clear documentation and rationale.
  • Cut quote-to-bind time, especially on complex risks, through decisive communication and clear workflows.
  • Earn top-tier broker satisfaction by being more responsive and easier to work with than any other carrier they use.
  • Adopt and help refine our underwriting tools and platforms.
  • Identify repeatable tasks that should be systematized so you can focus on what requires judgment, and push us to continuously improve how we evaluate, price, and service risks.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of underwriting experience in personal lines, preferably HNW or complex property risks
  • Strong understanding of risk analysis, property & liability coverages, pricing and compliance.
  • Track record of managing a profitable book while delivering excellent broker service
  • Ability to negotiate quote terms with internal and external stakeholders while building and maintaining strong, collaborative relationships.
  • Efficient and effective desk management
  • Proficiency in leveraging technology, with the ability to quickly adapt to new platforms and tools, and identify opportunities for process improvement.
  • Candidates must be authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Stand does not sponsor new work visas.
  • We can consider candidates on TN visas, O-1A visas, or H-1B transfers with three years or more remaining.

Skills

  • Deep curiosity about people, assets, and emerging risks
  • Creative problem-solving for non-standard risks with bespoke terms and layered structures
  • Broker-focused communication, explaining decisions clearly
  • Tech-inclined with a mindset for systematizing repeatable tasks
  • Ownership mentality, making timely decisions on complex submissions
  • Proficiency in leveraging technology
  • Ability to quickly adapt to new platforms and tools
  • Identify opportunities for process improvement

About the Company

  • At Stand, you’ll help build a new class of global property protection.
  • We use advanced physics and AI to model catastrophic risk at the asset level, then automate underwriting and mitigation before loss occurs.
  • Insurance is simply the current delivery mechanism. The real product is a scalable risk engine, our Stand World Model.
  • We stay when traditional insurers exit. We model what others approximate. And we build systems that change outcomes, not just prices.
  • Our leadership team includes former successful founders and CEOs from Metromile, PolicyGenius, WePay, and HotelTonight, bringing deep experience in building and scaling high-growth companies.
  • The property insurance industry is built to price loss after it happens. It relies on coarse proxies, backward-looking data, and manual processes, then accepts damage as unavoidable.
  • Stand takes a different approach. We simulate how real-world catastrophes affect individual properties, translate that into actionable decisions, and automate the business around it.
  • The result is a platform that can underwrite what others can’t and operate with far less friction.
  • Stand is reimagining high-net-worth personal lines insurance for a world where the old playbook doesn't work anymore.
  • Climate risk is escalating, client expectations are rising, and legacy carriers are retreating or stuck in out-dated workflows.
  • We're building the carrier that solves hard problems by combining deep underwriting judgment with modern technology to protect what matters most to our clients.
  • This isn't about moving paper faster.
  • It's about being the underwriter brokers want to work with on their toughest risks, the one who asks better questions, finds creative solutions, and builds a book that's both profitable and resilient.

Equal Opportunity

  • Stand is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate on the basis of protected veteran status, disability, or other legally protected status.
  • We believe that diversity enriches the workplace, and we are committed to growing our team with the most talented and passionate people from every community.
  • We are committed to providing reasonable accommodations for qualified individuals.
  • Pursuant to the San Francisco Fair Chance Ordinance, we will consider for employment qualified applicants with arrest and conviction records.
