About the Role
PathAI is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to provide technical leadership for AISight, their digital pathology platform. This full-stack role requires deep expertise in either frontend or backend development, with comfort across the entire stack. The engineer will set technical direction, tackle complex cross-cutting problems, and elevate the skills of those around them.
Responsibilities
- Own the architecture of major platform areas and drive technical strategy aligned with the product roadmap.
- Lead the design and delivery of complex, multi-team initiatives from problem definition to production.
- Write and review technical designs, identify risks, and make explicit tradeoffs.
- Write production code for critical and technically demanding system parts.
- Set and uphold engineering standards for code quality, testing, observability, security, and performance.
- Drive improvements to development practices and tooling.
- Collaborate with product, design, machine learning, infrastructure, QA, and regulatory teams.
- Ensure software reliability, data integrity, and compliance with regulated medical device requirements.
- Mentor senior and mid-level engineers and grow technical leadership.
- Shape hiring and onboarding processes.
- Represent engineering in customer, partner, and stakeholder conversations.
- Explain complex technical concepts to non-experts.
Requirements
- BS in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 8+ years of full lifecycle software development experience.
- Significant experience in a senior or technical lead role.
- Track record of architecting and shipping large-scale production systems.
- Experience leading technical initiatives across team boundaries.
- Deep expertise in either backend (Python, Django/FastAPI, data modeling, PostgreSQL, distributed/event-driven systems) or frontend (Vue/React, state management, frontend architecture, UX quality).
- Working proficiency in the other area (frontend or backend).
- Strong foundation in data structures, algorithms, and system design.
- Hands-on experience building and operating systems on a cloud platform (AWS preferred).
- Ability to influence technical decisions through clear writing, sound judgment, and collaboration.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively with a distributed team and non-technical stakeholders.
