About the Role
This position focuses on advanced Synergi Electric modeling, special study modeling, and MATLAB-based automation and model management capabilities within the System Planning organization. The role supports the delivery of technically rigorous, repeatable, and defensible planning studies, directly impacting distribution investment decisions, regulatory analysis, and long-range system planning.
Responsibilities
- Perform advanced Synergi Electric special studies, including 8760-hour thermal and voltage analyses, N-1 contingency studies, and fault current and protection-related studies.
- Develop, execute, and document scenario-based planning analyses comparing wires and non-wires solutions under varying load growth, DER adoption, and contingency conditions.
- Interpret modeling results and provide clear, defensible technical recommendations to planners, engineers, and leadership.
- Support medium- and long-range distribution planning studies, including capacity, asset performance, and system constraint identification.
- Apply advanced MATLAB programming and software development practices to automate Synergi Electric Solver execution, conduct batch execution of large-scale studies, and postprocess and visualize results.
- Support and enhance Synergi Electric Model Management functions, including automation around model setup, versioning, execution, and results tracking.
- Support integration between Synergi Electric and PSCAD, including model preparation, execution support, and data exchange for electromagnetic transient (EMT) studies.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align assumptions, modeling inputs, and methodologies.
- Develop and maintain standardized and automated workflows to improve efficiency, consistency, and auditability of special studies.
- Produce decision-ready reports, visualizations, and technical documentation.
- Support task and project execution using enterprise tools (e.g., Jira).
- Promote best practices in distribution modeling, automation, and model governance across the organization.
- Be available to work emergency restoration assignments as required.
- Be available to travel between MA/CT/NH as necessary.
Requirements
- Strong foundational understanding of distribution system planning, analysis, and operation.
- Hands-on experience with Synergi Electric distribution system modeling and Synergi Electric Solver workflows, including special studies.
- Demonstrated experience performing 8760-hour simulations, time series processing, and fault current and protection-related studies.
- Required skills in MATLAB programming and Simulink simulations, including automating Synergi Electric Solver execution, batch processing of large study sets, and postprocessing and visualization of modeling results.
- Ability to develop maintainable, tested, and version-controlled MATLAB code for Synergi Electric automation, large-scale batch studies, postprocessing, visualization, and reusable analysis workflows.
- Integration of agentic and AI-based workflows in MATLAB.
- Experience with Synergi Electric-PSCAD workflows and support of EMT-related studies is required or strongly preferred.
- Familiarity with Synergi Model Management capabilities and automation of model lifecycle functions.
- Knowledge of electric distribution system planning, including load growth, DER integration, voltage performance, and system constraints.
- Ability to work with large and complex datasets and perform critical analysis of results.
- Experience with SQL databases or structured enterprise data sources is a plus.
- Understanding of IT-aligned modeling workflows, documentation standards, and controlled execution environments.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical writing skills.
- Effective verbal communication skills for conveying technical results to varied audiences.
- Ability to collaborate effectively across planning, engineering, and IT organizations.
- Professional-level MATLAB and Simulink experience.
- Experience with SQL and database technologies (e.g., MS SQL).
- Demonstrated experience with Synergi Electric special studies in a planning or operational support context.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
- Work samples will be requested on demand.
- Must be available to work emergency restoration assignment as required.
- Must be available to travel between MA/CT/NH as necessary.
