About the Role
We are seeking highly skilled engineers to join our team and improve the experience of building and running software on GM's cloud platform. This is a Staff-level, hands-on engineering role focused on enhancing the entire cloud platform, including its foundations, control plane, and runtime. You will write code, set technical direction, and elevate the engineering standards for those around you.
Responsibilities
- Design and build core platform capabilities end to end, from API design through production operations.
- Set technical direction for one or more platform areas and write design documents.
- Identify and eliminate sources of developer toil and platform instability through code and automation.
- Build golden paths to make the correct way to ship at GM the easiest way.
- Utilize AI tooling (Cursor, Claude Code, agents) in daily work and enable platform usability by agents via APIs and MCP.
- Partner with SRE on reliability, on-call duties, and incident reviews, ensuring the platform meets measurable SLOs.
- Mentor senior engineers, review designs and code across teams, and model desired engineering standards.
- Collaborate with application teams to identify and resolve platform impediments.
Requirements
- Ten or more years of experience building and operating production infrastructure or platforms, with several years in a senior or staff role with cross-team technical leadership.
- Deep, hands-on experience with Kubernetes in production at scale, including cluster operations, multi-tenancy, autoscaling, and upgrades.
- Strong software engineering skills in Go or a comparable language, with experience writing production code.
- Experience designing and running an internal developer platform, PaaS, or cloud control plane.
- Expertise with infrastructure as code and declarative provisioning (e.g., Terraform, Crossplane, Kubernetes operators/controllers).
- Solid grounding in cloud networking, identity, and security, preferably on Azure.
- A track record of improving reliability through SLOs, observability, and blameless incident practice.
- Strong product sense for developer experience, paying attention to details like CLI output, error messages, and documentation.
- Judgment to simplify systems, preferring deletion over addition.
- Clear written communication skills and the ability to gain buy-in for designs from skeptical audiences.
