About the Role

The CloudBees platform is the foundation for all products. This role is critical for ensuring the platform's performance, which directly impacts engineering speed and customer trust. The Principal Software Engineer will direct, lead, and contribute to building and operating the platform, bringing deep back-end expertise and a product mindset, understanding that 'platform is a product'. The ideal candidate is excited about the future of software development with coding agents and AI, ships production-quality code, designs resilient systems, and understands distributed systems tradeoffs.

Responsibilities

  • Own the Platform Foundation: Understand existing platform code and architecture, form opinions on its strengths and weaknesses, and define the technical roadmap with measurable goals.
  • Write critical-path code, refactors, performance work, and stability fixes.
  • Bring the Team with You: Earn team trust, guide execution by setting direction, defining standards, and unblocking complex problems.
  • Lead design reviews and code reviews with rigor and honesty.
  • Make Quality the Default: Establish development practices for testing, interfaces, service boundaries, and release discipline.
  • Drive observability (metrics, structured logs, tracing) and use it to find root causes.
  • Document architecture decisions and their reasoning.

Requirements

  • 12+ years of relevant experience as a founding, principal, or staff engineer.
  • Experience building and operating a complex microservices platform in production.
  • Extensive distributed-systems experience, including concurrency, event-driven architectures, message buses, and their failure modes.
  • Experience taking over a complex codebase and measurably improving it.
  • Contributes code that ships to production weekly.
  • Thinks like a technical founder, owning outcomes for the whole system.
  • High emotional intelligence, able to critique designs constructively and change mind based on data.
  • Prefers simple solutions over clever ones.
  • Customer obsessed, treating customer problems as their own.
  • High agency, owning problems beyond job description and moving without being asked.
  • Truth seeking, holding strong points of view and updating them with data.
  • Hard work ethic, owning the end result and going beyond expectations.
  • High quality bar and urgency in shipping, learning from every iteration.
  • Gives and actively asks for honest, constructive feedback.
