About the Role

This role focuses on the cell side of protein characterization, requiring the maintenance of cell lines and execution of assays to evaluate protein behavior on living cells with consistent high standards.

Responsibilities

  • Run cell culture and cell-based assays for protein characterization.
  • Maintain mammalian cell lines from thaw through routine passage to banked stock.
  • Perform weekly seeding, treatment, reading, and reporting of assay plates.
  • Execute assays with appropriate controls and replicates for defensible results.
  • Monitor plates, cell lines, or reagent lots for deviations.
  • Refine protocols and adapt them for automation-compatible plate formats.
  • Take over routine culture and banking for protein cell lines.
  • Learn the assay panel end to end by running each assay.
  • Independently run assays, including controls and acceptance criteria.
  • Revise culture or assay protocols for clarity and reproducibility.
  • Manage the weekly assay schedule and deliver results within agreed turnaround times.
  • Improve protocol precision or adapt them for automation.

Requirements

  • Strong hands-on mammalian cell culture experience (adherent and suspension lines).
  • Proficiency in aseptic technique.
  • Experience in thawing, passaging, and banking cell lines to a high and consistent standard.
  • Experience running cell-based assays end to end, including controls, replicates, and dose-response curves.
  • Comfort with plate-based work, including dilution series, plate maps, and normalization.
  • Ability to maintain careful, traceable records that others can follow.
  • PhD in cell biology, pharmacology, immunology, or a related field, OR an MSc with 2-3 years of relevant lab experience.
  • Experience with reporter cell line bioassays for binding or blockade.
  • Experience with receptor internalization, lysosomal trafficking, or cytotoxicity assays.
  • Experience with high-content or fluorescence imaging and analysis.
  • Experience with 384-well formats, liquid handlers, or other plate-based automation.
  • Experience with flow cytometry for surface receptor quantification.
