About the Role

As the first in-house finance hire at a fast-moving startup, you will own the accounting function, manage the transition to an in-house system, and grow into a strategic finance role. This high-intensity position offers significant exposure to critical business decisions and reports directly to the CEO.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the transition from an outside accounting provider to an in-house setup, including system selection/cleanup, data migration, historical cleanup, and handover.
  • Own and maintain the chart of accounts, ensuring line items are clean, consistent, and useful for decision-making.
  • Execute monthly book closings on a tight timeline, including accruals, prepaids, inventory, and deferred revenue.
  • Perform reconciliations for bank accounts, payment processors, payout/withdrawal flows, inventory, and buyback activity.
  • Manage and forecast cash flow, including a rolling 13-week cash forecast, AP/AR, and visibility into payouts and inventory spend.
  • Collaborate with external accountants and advisors for year-end processes, tax filings (CA/US, sales tax/GST/HST), and audits/reviews.
  • Establish controls, policies, and processes to support scalable finance operations.
  • Build and maintain the company financial model, including projections, unit economics, and scenario planning.
  • Analyze budget vs. actuals with the leadership team and translate variances into actionable decisions.
  • Play a key role in capital raises by assessing opportunities, managing the data room, and generating investor reporting and board materials.

Requirements

  • CPA designation (CPA, CA or CPA, CMA).
  • 4–8 years of experience, ideally starting at a Big 4 or mid-tier firm and then moving in-house at a startup or scale-up.
  • Experience owning a monthly close end-to-end.
  • Experience leading or playing a major role in an accounting system migration (QuickBooks, Xero, or NetSuite).
  • Some FP&A experience, including building a financial model from scratch or influencing successful strategic initiatives.
  • Obsession with clean books combined with a practical approach for startup environments.
  • Proficiency or eagerness to use AI tools to enhance team efficiency.
  • Ability to excel in ambiguous, fast-paced environments with a strong bias towards action.
  • Excellent written communication skills for explaining financial data to non-finance personnel.
  • Interest in TCGs (Pokémon, One Piece), sports cards, collectibles, or gaming.
