About the Role

We are seeking a Senior HV Engineer to serve as the in-house technical authority for grid connection and HV engineering on utility-scale solar PV and battery storage projects in the UK and Ireland, with potential support for projects in Italy. This role spans the entire project lifecycle, from feasibility and development through to procurement and construction assurance, ensuring technical deliverability and compliance.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the technical aspects of connection method and grid route optioneering for development.
  • Direct feasibility studies and recommend optimal connection options based on constructability, consentability, land take, and cost.
  • Integrate grid engineering into the development case early, influencing consents and land agreements.
  • Define substation footprints, cable route corridors, and crossing strategies for planning applications.
  • Provide technical input for land, wayleave, and easement discussions.
  • Prepare technical inputs for grid connection and modification applications.
  • Produce concept-level single line diagrams, substation layouts, and route corridors.
  • Act as the primary technical contact for development-stage consultants on cable routes, HV design, and power system studies.
  • Define technical scopes, review deliverables, and challenge conclusions from consultants.
  • Specify and review cable modelling, ampacity, and losses studies.
  • Set and challenge technical grid CAPEX assumptions and the engineering basis of the connection programme.
  • Produce technical reports, planning inputs, and position papers for Investment Committee and lender scrutiny.
  • Technically interpret connection offers, Connection Agreements, and technical schedules.
  • Review and challenge network study outputs and translate them into Employer's Requirements and scope decisions.
  • Own the contestable/non-contestable/Contractor interface on each project, defining and recording scope splits.
  • Ensure G99/Grid Code compliance obligations are allocated correctly within scopes.
  • Own Elgin's technical compliance position with the network operator.
  • Lead derogation applications and witness compliance testing.
  • Author and maintain HV and grid sections of Employer's Requirements and Division of Responsibilities.
  • Support Procurement through tendering, evaluation, and technical negotiation.
  • Assure contractors' HV and grid design, ensuring submissions meet Employer's Requirements and network operator standards.
  • Decide Elgin's position on deviations with reasoned justification.
  • Act as Elgin's technical escalation point for Project Engineers, Owner's Engineer, and PMA through construction, commissioning, and energisation.
  • Decide Elgin's response to site work deviations.
  • Review contractors' Grid Code compliance and energisation submissions.
  • Attend key witness tests.
  • Maintain Elgin's HV and grid engineering standards, templates, and lessons learned.
  • Stay updated on DNO/TSO standards and policy changes.

Requirements

  • BEng/MEng in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or a related discipline.
  • Extensive HV and grid connection engineering experience (MV through 132 kV).
  • Experience with delivered UK utility-scale solar, BESS, or ICP/DNO connection projects through to energisation.
  • Detailed working knowledge of the GB connection process, including G99, Connection Agreements, contestable/non-contestable works, ICP/iDNO model, DNO design approval, and derogations.
  • Experience with development-stage grid work, including applications, offer assessment, optioneering, and technical inputs to planning/land agreements.
  • Ability to read and challenge network study outputs and translate them into design and scope decisions.
  • Strong HV design review capability (switchgear, protection, earthing, cables, substations, metering, telecoms).
  • Experience authoring or reviewing Employer's Requirements and Division of Responsibilities.
  • Experience scoping and challenging external consultants.
  • Ability to translate technical decisions into CAPEX, programme, and risk implications.
  • Clear communication skills, both written and verbal, to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to specify, review, and challenge cable modelling and power system studies.
  • Working familiarity with AutoCAD and power system analysis tools.
  • Full driving licence.
  • Willingness to travel to project sites in the UK and Ireland.
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) or working towards chartership (Desirable).
  • Irish connection experience (ESB Networks/EirGrid, CRU policy, ECP and RESS delivery) (Desirable).
  • Transmission-level (110 kV to 220 kV) experience (Desirable).
  • BESS and co-located hybrid connections, including Grid Code compliance for storage (Desirable).
  • Power system modelling (DIgSILENT PowerFactory, ETAP or PSCAD) (Desirable).
  • Technical due diligence for acquisitions or lenders (Desirable).
  • CDM 2015 designer duties (Desirable).
  • Experience across multiple network operators (NGED, UKPN, SPEN, NPg, SSEN) and National Grid/NESO (Desirable).
  • Exposure to the Italian connection process (Terna) (Desirable).
