About the Role

We are looking for a Director of Data Science & Machine Learning to lead the function behind real-time logistics decisions and optimize our network. This is a leader-of-leaders role, managing a global team of 90+ data scientists, operations research scientists, ML engineers, and MLOps engineers through managers and principal data scientists. You will set the DS/OR/ML agenda, focusing on keeping real-time decision systems reliable at marketplace scale while advancing optimization, supply/demand shaping, and applied AI.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver measurable improvement in delivery time, courier utilization, cost per order, and courier pay efficiency.
  • Own the strategy and roadmap for real-time decision systems, including demand forecasting, supply balancing, order-to-courier assignment, and dynamic pay/fee pricing.
  • Understand and shape courier behavior through incentive and pay design grounded in economics and causal modeling.
  • Set the Operations Research agenda, focusing on combinatorial optimization, solvers, and simulation for capacity planning and policy testing.
  • Establish validation standards before launch using backtesting and simulation frameworks.
  • Own the quality of the ML platform and MLOps standards, including feature and model pipelines, CI/CD, serving, monitoring, and drift detection.
  • Drive experimentation and causal inference in a marketplace, including switchback and geo-based designs, and connect experiment results to long-term outcomes.
  • Build applied AI that delivers value in production, including LLM-based and agentic products.
  • Build the organization by hiring and developing managers and principals, and establishing university partnerships.
  • Partner with Logistics Product, Logistics Engineering, Commercial, and central Technology on production delivery of dispatch, estimations, pay, and supply/demand shaping actions.

Requirements

  • Leadership experience in Data Science, ML, or Operations Research, including leading large, cross-time zone organizations through managers and developing those managers.
  • Deep credibility in real-time ML and marketplace or network optimization (logistics, ride-hailing, delivery, or similar).
  • Experience taking models from research into low-latency production at scale.
  • Strong grounding in experimentation and causal inference under network effects.
  • Understanding of the economics of multi-sided marketplaces where participants respond strategically.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills, with the ability to influence Product and Engineering leadership and translate technical choices into business outcomes.
  • A pragmatic approach to AI, focusing on delivering value.
  • Advanced degree in a quantitative field or equivalent experience.
