About the Role

Your mission is to keep our users safe by building technical safeguards into our platform and API, developing product features for user protection, and collaborating with the Community Management team. You will prioritize security, anticipate potential attacks, and design user-centric safety features.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement technical safeguards in our API and backend, including abuse detection, rate limiting, verification checks, and fake account/scam detection.
  • Ship user-facing safety features such as reporting flows, warnings on suspicious messages, blocking and privacy controls, and safer default settings.
  • Threat-model new features to identify potential abuses and design corresponding friction and detection mechanisms.
  • Assess and implement third-party integrations to enhance threat management.
  • Stay current on evolving attacks against social platforms.
  • Lead incident response efforts, making decisions and taking action during security events.
  • Determine whether to build solutions in-house or integrate third-party tools.
  • Build tooling and standards for the moderation team to improve case handling and consistency.
  • Translate moderation insights into product and platform improvements, and leverage platform signals for better moderation decisions.
  • Own platform-side obligations under the Digital Services Act and GDPR, ensuring compliance and maintaining audit-ready evidence.
  • Measure safety performance, including harm reaching users, response speed, and decision accuracy.

Requirements

  • A security-first mindset with the ability to threat-model by instinct, probe feature abuse, and stay current on attack vectors.
  • Solid production experience with Ruby on Rails.
  • Strong SQL skills and a deep understanding of database behavior to identify abuse patterns.
  • A firm grasp of client-server architecture, including trust limitations, risk assessment, and API failure modes under attack.
  • Infrastructure fluency in AWS, logging, observability, and queues, with the ability to reason about systems under attack.
  • A user- and product-centric view, with comfort in shaping frontend safety features.
  • Ability to work effectively with non-engineers (moderators, product, legal), explaining technical risks clearly and integrating moderation insights into code.
  • Judgment under pressure, balancing user safety and freedom, and making quick decisions during risk events.
  • Deliberate use of AI for leverage, directing and reviewing generated code for production quality.
  • Excellent English skills for international team collaboration.
  • Willingness to move towards full-stack development and learn other stacks if not already proficient.
