About the Role
To build and lead the engineering organization creating the best product in motorsport, ensuring rapid, predictable, and high-quality delivery. This role owns the people, delivery, and process aspects of engineering across product and ML, partnering with the CTPO to establish standards, systems, and culture.
Responsibilities
- Own and grow the engineering team, including running 1:1s, providing feedback, and building growth plans.
- Recognize excellence and address underperformance directly and early.
- Own engineering's delivery cadence and commitments, making output predictable and progress visible.
- Manage research-heavy work by breaking it into staged steps with clear uncertainty and user value delivery.
- Identify and fix systemic causes for delivery delays.
- Own and improve the team's culture, rituals, and processes (e.g., planning, retros, definition of done).
- Lead organization-wide standards and practices for quality, reliability, infrastructure, and cost.
- Lead as an AI-native engineering organization, spending time in the codebase and collaborating on technical decisions.
- Own engineering hiring and onboarding, prioritizing talent density and ensuring new hires lift the average.
- Shape the team's external presence through blogs, talks, or open source contributions.
- Ensure the team is faster, prouder, and more ambitious due to your leadership.
Requirements
- Strong track record of managing software engineers, including leading multiple teams or managing managers.
- Experience taking over existing teams and building new ones through hiring.
- Proven ability to make a team measurably faster through improvements in delivery, predictability, scoping, or cycle time.
- Ability to hold a high, explicit bar that motivates the team.
- Experience building people systems such as engineering ladders, feedback flows, and work planning/review processes.
- Technical strength and hands-on capability, with experience as a senior or staff engineer.
- Startup-scale pragmatism, comfortable designing for a larger organization while operating in an early-stage one.
- Excellent written communication skills for documentation, expectations, decisions, and feedback.
- Fluency with AI and its impact on engineering organizations.
- Obsession with the product and its users, including regular critical use of the product (dogfooding).
- Experience delivering predictably in uncertain environments, leading ML, data science, or research-heavy work into production.
- Experience operating at the leadership level, owning budgets, reporting to executives, and managing technical due diligence or acquisitions.
- Passion for motorsport or genuine curiosity and ability to learn quickly.
- Regular presence at the London HQ is a strong plus.
