About the Role
The Global Bank team builds core infrastructure and services for a digital bank account, helping small businesses manage their money. The Balance Management Squad is central to this platform, currently consolidating the European balance management system and building a global transaction history service for consistent financial activity views.
Responsibilities
- Build and evolve SumUp’s core banking services powering ledger operations and transactions, transforming regional systems into a unified, scalable global platform.
- Tackle complex distributed systems challenges, ensuring resilient services that perform under high transaction volumes.
- Support modernization initiatives by improving observability, adding test coverage, refactoring code, and gradually introducing new architectural patterns.
- Contribute to key architectural decisions, building ledger and transaction history systems from the ground up for global scalability.
- Collaborate with teams across Risk, Treasury, Finance, and Infrastructure for smooth, compliant, and reliable global operations.
- Take ownership from design to production, running services, monitoring performance, and continuously improving software delivery at scale.
Requirements
- Solid backend experience building reliable, high-volume services with careful consideration of system design, APIs, data modeling, and service interaction.
- Proficiency in Golang and comfort learning other languages like Kotlin or Elixir.
- Ability to write maintainable, well-tested code, follow CI/CD best practices, and take responsibility for software from development to production.
- Experience building, deploying, and running services in cloud environments like AWS using Docker and Kubernetes.
- Fluency in relational databases that perform well under load and maintain data consistency.
- Collaborative spirit with experience working across regions, communicating clearly, exchanging feedback effectively, and making joint technical decisions.
- Curiosity for building reliable financial services and understanding the banking domain.
