About the Role

Phenix Space is seeking a hands-on electrical engineer to manage avionics hardware development, from architecture and schematic design through to integration and flight. This role involves close collaboration with electronics, robotics, software, and GNC engineers to create upgradeable space systems.

Responsibilities

  • Own avionics hardware development through its full lifecycle: architecture, schematic capture, layout review, bring-up, and flight support.
  • Transition designs from early prototypes to space-ready, robust, and scalable hardware.
  • Define flight computer architecture, selecting processors, safety microcontrollers, and redundancy based on performance, power, radiation tolerance, cost, and schedule.
  • Design for LEO, MEO, and GEO environments.
  • Support actuator and sensor electronics, including motor drives, sensors, cameras, and lidar.
  • Integrate safety systems into all products.
  • Develop interface electronics for power and high-speed data transmission through on-orbit mated and demated connectors.
  • Design power architecture for peak loads, including protection, filtering, battery, and load management.
  • Lead avionics architecture decisions and manage interfaces with mechanical, robotics, propulsion, and software teams.
  • Develop embedded firmware for bring-up and testing in collaboration with software engineers.
  • Work with buses such as EtherCAT, CAN-FD, SPI, I2C, and RS-485.
  • Perform board bring-up at the bench, including driver development, bootloaders, and health monitoring.
  • Rapidly prototype boards to accelerate new project development.
  • Conduct in-house environmental testing for rapid design iteration.
  • Manage environmental and reliability testing (thermal, vacuum, vibration, radiation) with partners and iterate designs based on results.
  • Select components for space environments and design for test, reliability, and manufacturing.
  • Collaborate with vendors and manufacturing partners to source high-reliability electronics, actuators, and sensors, and to produce flight-ready hardware.

Requirements

  • B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in electrical engineering, mechatronics, computer, or aerospace engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of experience owning electrical or avionics hardware through its full lifecycle in spacecraft, robotics, automotive, defense, or similar industries.
  • Proficiency in schematic capture and PCB design and review for complex digital, mixed-signal, and power boards.
  • Hands-on experience with board bring-up, including firmware flashing and debugging using oscilloscopes and logic analyzers.
  • Sufficient embedded C/C++ knowledge to write bring-up and test firmware, along with Python proficiency.
  • Familiarity with low-level buses such as EtherCAT, CAN, SPI, I2C, and UART.
  • Understanding of actuation, including motors, drives, and associated electronics.
  • Ability to articulate hardware trade-offs, balancing performance against power, mass, radiation tolerance, cost, and schedule.
  • U.S. person status required for export control (ITAR/EAR).
