About the Role
Coordinate the design, procurement, and execution of U.S. power generation projects that supply large industrial facilities and data centers, at a scale of gigawatts. Projects combine gas turbines and engines, solar PV, battery energy storage (BESS), and microgrid technologies. The Engineering Manager ensures that the work of discipline leads, EPC contractors, Owner's Engineers, and OEMs fits together by reviewing technical deliverables, managing interfaces, technical RFIs, submittals, and design changes, consolidating bid and contract technical packages, and driving technical issues toward schedule milestones. This role reports to the Chief Operations Officer.
Responsibilities
- Coordinate and review conceptual and detailed designs for power generation and storage systems (gas turbines/engines, solar PV, BESS), including site layouts and single-line diagrams.
- Organize design reviews of EPC and Owner's Engineer deliverables (drawings, calculations, specifications): distribute documents, consolidate comments from discipline leads, and track them to closure.
- Coordinate between discipline leads and the project team to ensure design alignment and timely resolution of technical issues.
- Ensure integration of generation, storage, and other components to enable islanding and microgrid operation.
- Act as the primary technical point of contact between the Tokyo office, the U.S. project team, EPC contractors, OEMs, and Owner's Engineers, coordinating civil, electrical, mechanical/gas turbine, and controls disciplines.
- Develop and maintain the interface matrix and scope split between owner, EPC contractor, OEMs, and utilities.
- Manage technical RFIs, technical queries, submittals, and document registers in the project management system (Procore).
- Coordinate the evaluation of design changes and change orders with discipline leads, and summarize their impact on scope, cost, and schedule.
- Lead technical coordination meetings with the U.S. team, EPC contractors, Owner's Engineers, and OEMs across time zones; issue minutes and track actions.
- Coordinate preparation and review of equipment specifications, data sheets, and bills of materials for major equipment (gas turbines, GSUs, HV breakers, switchgear, inverters, BESS).
- Compile the technical sections of EPC and major-equipment bid packages, prepare technical bid tabulations, and support the technical evaluation of OEM and EPC bids.
- Support technical contract exhibits: scope of work, interface responsibilities, technical inputs to performance guarantees, liquidated damages, and warranties.
- Track vendor document submissions and manufacturing milestones, and attend or coordinate factory inspections and factory acceptance tests (FAT).
- Track technical milestones and critical-path technical items, working with project controls and schedulers.
- Maintain the project technical risk and issue register and escalate issues early.
- Coordinate permitting and interconnection application packages with the U.S. team (technical content provided by discipline leads).
- Support construction, site testing, and commissioning: site technical queries, punch lists, and turnover documentation.
- Represent the project team as a technical point of contact on calls with customers, independent engineers, and suppliers.
- Report technical status, risks, and decisions needed to management, including technical aspects that affect commercial decisions.
- Perform other assignments and special projects as requested by management.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in engineering (electrical, mechanical, civil, or a related energy field).
- 6+ years in the power generation industry, including design and/or execution of power plants.
- Experience managing multidisciplinary interfaces, technical RFIs, submittals, and design changes.
- Ability to read and review drawings and documents across disciplines (single-line diagrams, P&IDs, general arrangements, civil layouts, specifications).
- Experience preparing or reviewing equipment specifications and EPC/vendor deliverables.
- Working knowledge of EPC contracts and the equipment procurement process.
- Experience with a project management or document control system (Procore, Aconex, or similar), CAD, and MS Office.
- Business-level English (written and spoken).
- Eligibility to work in Japan.
- Visa sponsorship is available for candidates who need it.
