About the Role
We are building a new layer of AI-powered features on top of our platform to enable more users to get answers faster, ensuring those answers are grounded, traceable, and defensible. As one of our first AI Product Engineers, you will ship LLM and agentic features into a product used for critical infrastructure decisions and help define how we build with AI across engineering.
Responsibilities
- Design, prototype, and ship AI-powered features end-to-end, from problem identification to production deployment.
- Build agentic and retrieval-based systems grounded in the Neara digital twin and simulation outputs for traceable answers.
- Own the development of AI output trustworthiness, designing guardrails, refusals, confidence signals, and human-in-the-loop checkpoints.
- Build the evaluation discipline, including eval sets, regression testing, quality signals, observability, and versioning.
- Collaborate with power systems and GIS specialists to ensure engineering-grade outputs.
- Engage with customers and product teams to define and iterate on product features.
- Set the standard for AI development practices at Neara, including the use of coding agents.
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience building and shipping production software, with deep backend or full-stack product engineering expertise.
- Proven experience shipping AI features to paying customers in a commercial product and owning them post-launch.
- Hands-on experience with retrieval, context engineering, tool use, agent orchestration, structured output, and prompt design.
- Demonstrated experience building and describing an evaluation approach for AI systems.
- Sound judgment regarding appropriate AI usage and a focus on designing for failure modes.
- Strong product sense and comfort working directly with users and product teams.
- Experience shipping into regulated or enterprise environments (data residency, auditability, private deployments, security review) is a plus.
- Experience with geospatial, 3D, CAD, simulation, or other engineering software is a plus.
- Experience with AI coding tools in daily work is a plus.
- Utilities, energy, or critical infrastructure domain knowledge is a plus.
- Must have current and unrestricted working rights.
- Visa sponsorship is not offered.
