About the Role

Doppel is seeking a hands-on Payroll Accounting Manager to own U.S. and global payroll operations and build a scalable global payroll function. This role requires a strong payroll operator with expertise in payroll accounting, processing, journal entries, reconciliations, tax compliance, and month-end close support within a fast-moving startup environment.

Responsibilities

  • Own accurate and timely U.S. and global payroll processing for employees and contractors, including payroll calendars, changes, approvals, off-cycle payments, and issue resolution.
  • Oversee EOR pay runs and collaborate with local payroll providers for international entities.
  • Review payroll-impacting items such as new hires, terminations, compensation changes, bonuses, commissions, benefits, leave events, taxable benefits, 401(k) deductions, employer contributions, and equity-related taxable events.
  • Oversee Travel & Expense reimbursements and payments using RAMP and Navan.
  • Manage, update, and communicate changes to multi-country expense policies.
  • Prepare payroll journal entries, support month-end close, and reconcile payroll-related accounts.
  • Partner with People Operations, Legal, FP&A, AP, external payroll providers, and local advisors to ensure payroll data accuracy and timeliness.
  • Support payroll tax compliance, year-end reporting, W-2 review, payroll tax notices, audit requests, and internal controls.
  • Assist with international payroll setup and ongoing coordination across EOR, PEO, and direct local payroll models.
  • Improve payroll processes, documentation, reconciliations, controls, and system workflows for scalability.

Requirements

  • 6-10 years of progressive payroll experience, including global and U.S. payroll operations, payroll accounting, and payroll tax compliance.
  • Strong understanding of U.S. payroll regulations, payroll taxes, wage and hour requirements, and multi-state payroll compliance.
  • Solid payroll accounting knowledge, including experience preparing payroll journal entries and reconciling payroll-related balance sheet accounts.
  • Experience supporting month-end close, payroll reporting, audit requests, and financial reporting schedules.
  • Ability to coordinate effectively across Accounting, People Operations, Legal, FP&A, and external partners without direct authority.
  • Experience working with external payroll providers.
  • Experience with Google Workspace, Rippling, and DEEL.
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly learn and optimize new systems, leveraging technology and AI to build scalable processes and strong internal controls.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, high-growth startup environment where processes are evolving.
  • Experience managing payroll through multiple operating models, including direct payroll, Employer of Record (EOR), and Professional Employer Organization (PEO) providers.
  • Experience transitioning employees from a PEO or EOR to a standalone payroll platform following entity establishment.
  • Experience working with international payroll providers.
  • Experience in a high-growth, venture-backed technology company.
  • Experience designing internal controls.
