About the Role
We are seeking a Tinkerer, a research engineer who will use and improve our Tinker product, and support the open source community in building with Thinking Machines' offerings. This role involves direct user engagement, creating documentation, developing library features, and prototyping integrations to drive product enhancements. You will also share insights on post-training science and techniques.
Responsibilities
- Write, test, and maintain code examples, recipes, agentic training pipelines, and documentation for Tinker and Inkling.
- Work directly with developers and researchers to debug technical issues, gather feedback, and optimize fine-tuning and deployment pipelines.
- Partner with research and infrastructure teams to translate community feedback into product improvements and develop new post-training recipes.
- Build tools, integrations, and demos to simplify user experimentation, adoption, and deployment of Thinking Machines' models.
- Represent Thinking Machines in the open source community through various content and engagement channels.
- Contribute to and maintain open source libraries, answering questions and reviewing contributions.
- Help shape the developer experience roadmap, priorities, and product strategy for Tinker.
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience in developer relations, developer experience, or a software engineering role with significant open source or community-facing work.
- Strong software engineering skills with experience writing and shipping production-quality Python code.
- Hands-on experience fine-tuning, evaluating, or deploying large language models (LLMs), including supervised and reinforcement learning and hyperparameter tuning.
- Comfortable reasoning about model training, fine-tuning, and inference, and discussing tradeoffs.
- Deep expertise in post-training LLMs on new domains and improving model capability.
- Track record contributing to, maintaining, or growing open source software libraries.
- Thoughtful about developer experience, including ergonomics, onboarding, and potential issues.
- Experience writing public or internal technical content like code examples, tutorials, cookbooks, or papers.
- Comfortable engaging publicly through talks, livestreams, or conference appearances.
- Familiarity with multimodal models (text, image, audio) and their training/fine-tuning/inference tradeoffs.
