About the Role
We are seeking an early-career policy associate to support our U.S. policy initiatives. This role is crucial for translating state-of-the-art AI verification into policy-relevant terms for Washington and ensuring engineers align with governmental policy objectives. You will collaborate closely with the Head of U.S. Policy and the technical team, with the role's scope adaptable to the successful candidate's profile. The work addresses the urgent need for AI verification solutions as frontier AI incidents increase, providing developers and governments with tools to mitigate extreme risks.
Responsibilities
- Track domestic frontier AI regulation at federal and state levels, keeping the team informed on verification-relevant developments.
- Draft policy-related documents including briefings, public comments, explainers, and responses for policymakers, congressional staff, agencies, and the governance community, accurately representing AI verification capabilities and limitations.
- Develop and maintain a standardized set of materials about Lucid's work to ensure consistent and informed responses to government and partner inquiries.
- Prepare the team for meetings with policymakers and partners, including conducting background research, creating briefing notes, and documenting agreements and outcomes.
- Manage the system for tracking engagement and results with external stakeholders.
- Collaborate with research and red teams to translate policy proposals into verifiable claims and technical findings into accessible language for policymakers.
- Assist with various small team needs, such as grant applications and event support.
Requirements
- Experience in U.S. AI or technology policy, gained through government, Congress, a think tank, or a corporate policy role.
- Demonstrated ability to achieve results, even with 1-2 years of experience (including fellowships/internships), evidenced by tangible accomplishments rather than just tracking.
- Capacity to accurately represent technical work, with the ability to understand technical details with assistance and identify inaccuracies.
- Proficiency in writing that makes complex technical material understandable to non-experts.
- Comfort operating in ambiguous environments with limited precedent and a preference for establishing structure.
- A technical background in security, cryptography, hardware, or distributed systems is useful but not required.
- Familiarity with verification regimes in other fields like arms control or nuclear safeguards is useful but not required.
- Experience making technical or policy work accessible to a broad audience through various media (press, social media, multimedia, explainers) and a proactive approach to proposing ideas is useful but not required.
- Experience in standards bodies or multi-stakeholder governance is useful but not required.
- Experience establishing and managing essential systems for a small team, such as a CRM for relationship tracking, is useful but not required.
- Existing relationships within the communities focused on frontier AI oversight are useful but not required.
