About the Role

We are a small data science research team focused on building future-ready capabilities and strategic differentiation for PartnerRe’s Life & Health business globally, looking beyond a 2-year horizon. The initial focus is on medical underwriting in life insurance, transforming data and medical research into insights that will shape biometric risk assessment in the coming years.

Responsibilities

  • Track emerging trends in medical research, data availability, and relevant technologies to anticipate future business needs.
  • Translate ambiguous business questions into well-defined, answerable research questions.
  • Prioritize research questions with the greatest potential business impact.
  • Analyze data and build models to generate forward-looking insights.
  • Evaluate and adapt emerging technical methods to meet PartnerRe’s specific needs.
  • Critically appraise medical and health-related research, assessing study design, limitations, and relevance.
  • Communicate findings clearly to underwriters, medical doctors, and other non-technical stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate strong data analysis and modeling skills, applying sound judgment to real-world issues.
  • Engage hands-on with new technical methods relevant to the domain.
  • Critically evaluate empirical research, recognizing design weaknesses and correctly interpreting findings.
  • Think strategically about value and differentiation, translating trends into future business needs.
  • Shape vague business requests into structured, answerable research questions.
  • Work directly and effectively with stakeholders, including medical underwriters, physicians, and actuaries.
  • Thrive in a research environment with evolving priorities and limited predefined roadmaps.

Requirements

  • Bring a health-related research background (e.g., epidemiology, biostatistics, public health, health economics and outcomes research, or clinical epidemiology).
  • Demonstrate a genuine interest in medical and health research.
  • Prior exposure to life insurance products or medical underwriting processes is a strong asset but not required.
  • Experience with R is a plus and may shorten ramp-up time.
  • Hold a PhD in a field with a strong empirical, hypothesis-driven research tradition (such as epidemiology, biology, chemistry, or another life or physical science), or possess equivalent demonstrated research experience, evidenced by a substantial independent research project that can be discussed in depth.
