About the Role

Onto Innovation designs and manufactures inspection and metrology tools for chipmakers. This role involves designing, building, and shipping agentic applications for semiconductor metrology, requiring close collaboration with cross-functional teams throughout the product lifecycle. You will own features end-to-end, applying senior-level judgment to architecture, quality, and team mentorship.

Responsibilities

Build agentic applications for metrology, from design through production release.
Connect agents to real systems and integrate them with tools, data sources, and internal services.
Build the application surrounding the agent, including services, data flows, and user interfaces.
Engineer for reliability through automated testing, evaluation, CI/CD, and monitoring.
Improve software quality via design and code reviews, unit testing, test automation, and refactoring.
Deploy in fab conditions, meeting strict performance, security, and data-control requirements.
Translate metrology problems into well-scoped engineering work, bridging architecture and implementation.
Utilize AI coding tools responsibly for faster development while maintaining design integrity and code quality.
Run design and code reviews, document decisions, and mentor junior engineers.
Identify and drive improvements in software processes and toolchains.

Requirements

5+ years of professional software engineering experience.
2+ years building production applications with LLMs or agents.
Proficiency in Python, C++, or C#.
Strong grasp of data structures, design patterns, and object-oriented design.
Solid software design skills in APIs, services, concurrency, and event-driven systems.
Hands-on experience with LLM application engineering (tool calling, retrieval, prompt/context design, evaluation).
Solid engineering practices: automated testing, code review, CI/CD, containers, version control, agile, and DevOps.
Hands-on experience with AI-assisted development tools, including prompt writing, code review, and production code integration.
Working understanding of software security, IP, data privacy, and responsible AI.
Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills for complex software systems.
Ability to research and solve technical problems independently.
Comfort moving between system architecture and implementation details.
Experience developing software on Windows with Visual Studio and Azure DevOps.
BS in computer science, software or electrical engineering, physics, applied mathematics, or related field.
Clear written and verbal communication skills.
