About the Role

Firmus Technologies is seeking a Principal Engineer, Platform to own the engineering platform across public cloud and data centers. The role focuses on enabling engineers to securely ship services to production with minimal support through a self-service, API-first golden path. Designs must scale across hundreds of thousands of GPUs in gigawatt-scale AI factories.

Responsibilities

  • Own the architecture of the engineering platform and its multi-site management plane.
  • Set a target architecture two to three years ahead and plan the steps to achieve it.
  • Design the platform around a repeatable scaling unit for capacity growth and failure containment.
  • Decide on the build, network, upgrade, and recovery processes for internal Kubernetes and hypervisor clusters.
  • Ensure Kubernetes remains conformant and close to upstream releases with zero-downtime upgrades.
  • Automate new site deployment and regularly test recovery processes.
  • Decide on service packaging, release, and promotion strategies with progressive rollout and rollback capabilities.
  • Lead design reviews for significant changes and settle escalated technical disputes.
  • Make decisions rapidly with incomplete information, documenting assumptions and revisiting as needed.
  • Own engineer self-service through an API-first design, treating tickets as opportunities to improve self-service.
  • Maintain a service catalogue in code with owners and scorecards for production-readiness and security.
  • Provide multi-cluster deployment for internal teams and customer products.
  • Enable AI agents to work on the delivery path under strict controls, with human approval for production changes.
  • Set SLOs and error budgets for the platform and prioritize reliability work based on budget.
  • Lead technical responses to major incidents and ensure post-mortems result in preventative fixes.
  • Set standards for code review, acceptance tests, traceable builds, and security controls in pipelines.
  • Provide secrets management, certificate automation, and single sign-on as platform services.
  • Build continuous compliance for SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO 27001 into the platform.
  • Automate patching without disruption, including urgent security fixes within defined timelines.
  • Own cost management at the design level, including cloud spend.
  • Grow engineers through mentorship, design review, and code review.
  • Set standards for AI usage in software development, including review gates and automated checks.
  • Own technical interviews and assessments for platform engineers.
  • Shape the platform roadmap in collaboration with product, infrastructure, network, and site-delivery leaders.
  • Agree on ownership boundaries in writing with relevant teams and resolve disagreements directly.
  • Represent the platform team in customer and auditor reviews for security, reliability, and compliance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 10+ years in platform, infrastructure, or software engineering.
  • At least 3 years at a principal level or equivalent, setting technical direction for multiple teams.
  • Hands-on experience and intent to remain so.
  • Experience owning a golden path for engineers to ship services.
  • Experience with infrastructure as code (e.g., Terraform, OpenTofu).
  • Experience with CI/CD and GitOps (e.g., Argo CD, Flux).
  • Experience with progressive rollout, rollback, artifact signing, provenance, and security gates.
  • Experience running a platform as a product with self-service adoption measured by adoption and delivery performance.
  • Experience building, upgrading, and recovering Kubernetes on self-managed servers and in public clouds across multiple sites.
  • Deep, practical knowledge of Kubernetes internals (API server, etcd, scheduling, networking, storage, admission control).
  • Strong proficiency in Go or Python, developing services, controllers, or tools for consumption by other teams.
  • Experience building security into a platform (secrets management, certificate automation, short-lived credentials, fleet patching).
  • Experience running a reliability program (SLOs, error budgets, change control, incident reviews).
  • Clear written and verbal communication in English.
  • Willingness to join the on-call rotation.
  • Willingness to travel overseas occasionally.
