About the Role
As a Senior Solution Engineer for Internet and Mass-Scale Infrastructure (I&MI), you will serve as the lead technical authority and trusted advisor for Cisco's Service Provider routing, optical networking, and automation solutions across Japan. Based in Tokyo with hybrid work flexibility, you will partner closely with Account Executives (AEs), customer technical leaders, and Cisco Engineering to drive architectural strategy, lead complex solution design, execute proofs of concept (PoCs), and secure the technical win on high-impact customer engagements. Your success will be driven by your deep domain expertise in mass-scale networking, your ability to translate complex customer challenges into compelling technical architectures, and the collaborative relationships you cultivate across customer engineering teams, partners, and Cisco’s global Business Units. This position requires an individual who is highly motivated, technically rigorous, and equally adept at strategic architectural discussions and hands-on technical validation.
Responsibilities
- Act as the lead Solution Engineer for Service Provider routing, optics, Routed Optical Networking (RON), and network automation across the Japan I&MI market.
- Design scalable, resilient, and power-efficient next-generation network architectures for Tier-1 Service Providers, Cloud/Webscale, Large Enterprise, and Public Sector customers.
- Lead technical customer engagements, architectural workshops, RFP/RFI technical responses, and executive presentations to secure technical closure and competitive differentiation.
- Plan, design, and lead Proofs of Concept (PoCs), customer lab evaluations, and solution demonstrations showcasing Cisco's hardware, software, and automation capabilities.
- Partner seamlessly with Account Executives (AEs), Client Directors, Solution Architects, CX (Customer Experience), Channel Partners, and Marketing to build pipeline and accelerate business growth.
- Serve as the technical voice of Japan customers back to global Product Management and Engineering (BU), influencing future product roadmaps, feature requirements, and hardware innovations.
- Articulate the business and operational impact of Cisco’s mass-scale technologies (e.g., Cisco Silicon One, 800GE density, SRv6, telemetry, and power efficiency) through ROI/TCO modeling and architecture comparisons.
- Deliver technical enablement, whitepapers, and best-practice sharing to internal sales teams, partner engineers, and customer technical communities.
- Provide technical mentorship, coaching, and peer reviews for engineering colleagues across the broader Japan Systems Engineering organization.
Requirements
- 8+ years of technical pre-sales engineering, systems engineering, or network architecture experience, with a proven track record in Service Provider or mass-scale infrastructure environments.
- Deep technical mastery of Service Provider routing protocols and technologies (BGP, IS-IS/OSPF, MPLS, Segment Routing / SRv6, SR-TE, EVPN, Multicast, QoS, and High Availability).
- Strong architectural understanding of mass-scale routing platforms (Cisco 8000, ASR 9000, NCS 5500/540/560/5700 series, and Cisco Silicon One).
- Solid understanding of high-speed optics (400G/800G, coherent pluggables, ZR/ZR+) and IPoDWDM / Routed Optical Networking architectures.
- Practical experience with network automation, telemetry, and programmability frameworks (Cisco Crosswork, YANG, NETCONF/RESTCONF, gNMI, Python, Linux, Ansible, and API integrations).
- Native or business-level fluency in Japanese (for customer C-level and engineering presentations, technical workshops, and partner discussions).
- Business-level fluency in English (for direct collaboration with global Product Management, Engineering teams, and technical documentation).
- Self-starter with strong analytical problem-solving skills, consultative presentation ability, and willingness to travel as required for customer and partner meetings.
- Establish deep technical credibility with customer architects and leadership, listening attentively to their technical and business pain points and proposing pragmatic, future-proof architectures.
- Passion for staying on the cutting edge of networking innovations, cloud architectures, and open networking paradigms.
- Assume positive intent, communicate transparently with respect, and build enduring technical relationships internally and externally.
- Take pride in technical excellence, ensuring that proposed architectures are robust, scalable, and tailored to exceed customer expectations.
- Take full ownership of the technical strategy and deliver on commitments to customers, partners, and internal stakeholders.
- Generously share technical insights, elevate team capabilities, and actively foster a collaborative engineering culture.
