About the Role

Engineering Managers at PPRO build collaborative teams that ship high-quality, scalable and resilient products. In Transaction Processing, you will own the payment gateway and APIs at the heart of PPRO, impacting every payment processed. You will act as a "mini-CTO" for the platform, setting direction, growing people, and shaping the future of payment processing at PPRO.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with Product to translate ambiguous, multi-quarter goals into a technology strategy and roadmap for the gateway and API layer, managing milestones and cross-team dependencies.
  • Enhance APIs to be the optimal integration method for PPRO, incorporating APIs from other domains and supporting new partners and payment types.
  • Manage multiple critical initiatives simultaneously, owning risks and reprioritizing as needed based on business demands.
  • Foster an architecture culture across the platform, promoting shared patterns, reusable libraries, and clear domain boundaries for availability, scale, and PCI compliance.
  • Remain hands-on by reviewing designs and pull requests, pairing with engineers, and effectively utilizing AI tools.
  • Lead, coach, and develop engineers and Staff-level technical leaders, hiring to support API scope growth and raising the hiring bar.
  • Ensure operational excellence for the platform, including SLOs, error budgets, observability, testing standards, incident leadership, business continuity planning, and budget management.
  • Collaborate across domains such as Billing, Reconciliation, Disputes, Merchant Boarding, and Technical Operations, mediating priorities between Engineering, Product, and Partnerships.
  • Represent the platform to senior leadership and influence priorities beyond the immediate team.
  • Cultivate a team environment where members feel safe to challenge, provide feedback, and learn from failures.

Requirements

  • Experience leading engineering teams with broad platform scope, ideally with Staff Engineers or tech leads; managing multiple teams is a strong plus.
  • Proven track record of delivering complex, multi-quarter technical programs with high uncertainty and numerous cross-team dependencies.
  • Deep experience designing and operating high-availability distributed systems or public APIs at scale, utilizing Java and Spring Boot.
  • Strong experience with AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, and Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform).
  • A strong operational mindset, including SLOs, observability, incident management, testing strategy, and cost awareness.
  • Experience hiring, developing, and growing high-performing, diverse teams, with evidence of promoting individuals to higher levels.
  • Ability to articulate technical trade-offs to engineers, product partners, and senior leaders, both in writing and verbally.
  • Humble, inclusive leadership style with a pragmatic, results-oriented approach and a drive for continuous improvement.
  • Desire to spend approximately 40% of time engaged with code and architecture.
  • Hands-on experience using generative AI in engineering work, understanding its benefits and limitations.
  • Working proficiency in English.
