About the Role

We are seeking a Senior Harness Engineer to own the wire harnesses on our on-road autonomous vehicles, from design through fabrication and quality. This role involves taking a harness from electrical architecture to a released drawing package, and ensuring it is built, tested, and installed. You will work across vehicle platforms and hardware revisions, owning the fabrication and inspection process for every harness.

Responsibilities

  • Design wire harnesses connecting sensors, compute, power distribution, and vehicle interfaces.
  • Produce and release complete harness packages, including schematics, drawings, pinouts, wire lists, and BOMs.
  • Define and verify harness routing, retention, protection, and service loops on the vehicle.
  • Build and test prototype harnesses, and manage first article builds and production releases with manufacturing partners.
  • Write and maintain work instructions, inspection criteria, and end-of-line test procedures.
  • Ensure harness workmanship adheres to IPC/WHMA-A-620 standards, including crimp validation and testing.
  • Manage harness variants and configurations across vehicle platforms and hardware revisions.
  • Own and resolve harness issues from the build floor and fleet, driving corrective actions.
  • Qualify harness components and assemblies for the vehicle environment, developing design rules and an approved component list.
  • Support vehicle builds and bring-up, including installation, debug, and rework decisions.
  • Standardize connectors, terminals, and harness components, considering cost, availability, and serviceability.
  • Collaborate with electrical, mechanical, and supply chain teams.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Mechatronics, or Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent hands-on experience.
  • 5+ years of experience designing and releasing wire harnesses for vehicles, aircraft, or robotic systems.
  • Experience producing complete, buildable harness documentation using electrical design tools (e.g., Capital, Zuken E3.series) and 3D routing software (e.g., CATIA, NX, SolidWorks).
  • Working knowledge of wire, terminal, connector, seal, and circuit protection selection, grounding, and shielding practices.
  • Hands-on experience with harness fabrication techniques and testing.
  • Working knowledge of IPC/WHMA-A-620 and crimp validation methods.
  • Experience working with contract harness manufacturers on DFM, first articles, quality issues, and engineering changes.
  • Understanding of vehicle network fundamentals (CAN, CAN FD, LIN, Automotive Ethernet, GMSL, FPD-Link).
  • Experience with PLM/PDM systems and engineering change processes.
  • Working knowledge of structured problem-solving methodologies (8D, 5 Whys, fishbone, FMEA).
  • Clear written communication skills.
  • Ability to work onsite five days a week in San Francisco.
  • Regular time required in the garage and on the build floor.
  • Travel to harness manufacturing partners and test sites.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work at roof level and under vehicles.
