About the Role

Tempus is building the Patient Evaluation Engine, a high-scale, multi-modal healthcare platform where autonomous AI agents reason over clinical data to drive real-time clinical evaluation across federated networks of hospitals. We are looking for a Senior Data Engineer to build and own the data platform underneath it — the pipelines, models, and services that make EHR records, genomic results, and cardiovascular imaging discoverable, trustworthy, and usable by agents. This role requires strong software engineering capabilities and deep knowledge of Google Cloud infrastructure.

Responsibilities

  • Build the pipelines that feed the agents, optimizing for real-time inference.
  • Develop systems to fetch, parse, and serve structured and unstructured data.
  • Build and maintain dbt models on BigQuery, ensuring data trustworthiness.
  • Shape the data model across clinical EHR records, genomics, and imaging data.
  • Build and operate event-driven services for data movement and reliability.
  • Develop data access patterns and metadata layers for AI agents.
  • Build TypeScript services and APIs for agent coordination and data handling.
  • Extend and operate the platform's Google Cloud footprint in Terraform.
  • Build for federated networks of hospitals, ensuring multi-tenancy and high availability.
  • Implement automated solutions to monitor data quality and lineage.
  • Build observability, error tracking, and human-in-the-loop checkpoints.
  • Partner with clinical, analytics, and platform engineering teams on data standards and governance.

Requirements

  • Proven track record building and operating production data pipelines at scale.
  • Hands-on experience designing and running workloads on GCP.
  • Strong SQL and practical experience with dbt or an equivalent transformation framework.
  • Comfort owning infrastructure as code in Terraform and working in containers.
  • Experience writing production-quality application and service code.
  • Proficiency in Python for data pipelines and TypeScript for services and APIs.
  • Experience with pub/sub or queue-based architectures.
  • Working knowledge of HL7, FHIR, Epic/Cerner data structures, DICOM, and genomic data formats.
  • Familiarity with building secure, resilient systems under HIPAA and SOC 2.
