About the Role
This is a senior individual contributor role within Oaktree's newly formed Product Engineering group, instrumental in building the next-generation platform for Oaktree's credit business. The role is hands-on, requiring daily coding and deep involvement in the codebase to build systems, solve complex problems, and ship software. You will develop data-intensive applications covering the full stack, from data pipelines to user interfaces, aiming to scale Oaktree's credit business and enhance the effectiveness of investment professionals. You will work directly with business stakeholders to define and deliver engineering work, operating with autonomy in a cloud-modernizing environment.
Responsibilities
- Build and own critical components of the credit platform end-to-end, from data pipelines and services to user-facing applications.
- Design and implement performant, reliable, and evolving data-intensive applications, including ingestion pipelines, transformation layers, analytical engines, and APIs.
- Contribute to the modernization of Oaktree's technology stack, shaping platform evolution and advocating for experienced-based approaches.
- Collaborate directly with business stakeholders and investment professionals to understand needs and translate them into engineering work.
- Act as the de facto product owner for platform areas, prioritizing work, defining MVPs, running experiments, and making trade-off decisions.
- Apply generative AI thoughtfully to enhance development velocity, code quality, analytical capabilities, and build AI-powered features.
- Mentor and elevate engineers through design and code reviews, setting a high standard for craft and ownership.
- Implement modern development and release practices, including CI/CD, feature flags, automated testing, and observability.
- Champion data-driven experimentation and continuous feedback loops using telemetry and analytics.
- Communicate trade-offs clearly to both technical and business audiences, framing engineering decisions in terms of outcomes.
Requirements
- 10+ years of experience in software engineering, with a track record of building and owning data-intensive systems in production.
- Proven success as a senior individual contributor or staff/principal engineer in complex domains like financial services, infrastructure, or data platforms.
- Strong computer science fundamentals, including data structures, algorithms, concurrency, distributed systems, and performance.
- Deep expertise in designing systems that process, transform, and serve large volumes of data.
- Proficiency in Python and at least one statically typed, compiled language (e.g., C#/.NET, C++, Java, Scala, Go).
- Hands-on experience with at least one major cloud platform (Azure, AWS, or GCP) and modern cloud-native patterns.
- Comfortable working without a traditional PM structure, engaging directly with stakeholders and prioritizing independently.
- Strong product instinct, connecting technical execution with user needs and business outcomes.
- Skilled at mentoring engineers and influencing without authority.
- Excellent communicator, comfortable whiteboarding with engineers and discussing priorities with business leaders.
