About the Role
Chime's Data Science & Machine Learning team builds models, services, and platforms that help millions manage their financial lives. The Staff AI/ML Engineer on the Lending and Cashflow team will lead modeling for cash flow underwriting and surface member insights, using transaction and deposit data for fair, accurate credit decisions for individuals often missed by traditional scores. This role involves building and deploying ML systems on rich financial data to inform credit decisions for products like MyPay, Instant Loans, and SpotMe. You will own problems end-to-end, from question framing to production deployment, and set the technical direction for cash flow underwriting.
Responsibilities
- Lead the design, training, and deployment of deep learning and classical ML underwriting models for credit decisions, including approval, line assignment, and loss forecasting.
- Manage models from problem framing through production, including training, evaluation, deployment, monitoring, and iteration, ensuring accountability for live performance.
- Design and enhance surrounding systems, including feature pipelines, batch and real-time inference, monitoring, and retraining.
- Collaborate with Product, Engineering, Analytics, and Risk teams to translate business problems into ML solutions and ensure appropriate implementation.
- Connect model performance to member outcomes and business metrics, utilizing experimentation to demonstrate impact.
- Define the technical roadmap for Lending ML and elevate team standards through design reviews, mentorship, and shared best practices for model development, validation, and governance.
- Identify opportunities where AI/ML can deliver measurable member impact, and discern when simpler solutions are more effective.
Requirements
- Proven track record of leading the design and deployment of deep learning models in production, including multi-quarter, cross-team initiatives.
- Solid understanding of architecture choices, training dynamics, and evaluation, with the judgment for effective model design.
- Strong machine learning fundamentals, including classical modeling, evaluation design, and metric selection.
- Hands-on experience across the end-to-end ML lifecycle: training, experimentation, optimization, deployment, and monitoring.
- Comfort working with real-world data challenges such as label definition, leakage, class imbalance, and train/serve skew.
- Strong proficiency in Python and SQL.
- Deep learning framework experience (e.g., PyTorch).
- Distributed compute experience (e.g., Spark or PySpark).
- Working knowledge of modern ML infrastructure (AWS, SageMaker, Airflow, Kafka, Redis, Snowflake).
- An MLOps mindset for maintaining healthy production systems.
- Ability to operate independently in ambiguous environments.
- Skill in influencing technical direction beyond your immediate team.
- Capacity to clearly explain model decisions to diverse stakeholders, including engineers, risk partners, and senior leaders.
