About the Role

As a Network Engineer in VAST's Field Engineering organization, you will define how VAST connects to the world by creating reference architectures, validated switch configurations, and RDMA fabric designs for customer deployments. This is a design and research role focused on building and running a lab to qualify new hardware and software, investigating network behavior, and resolving complex customer issues.

Responsibilities

  • Define reference network architectures for VAST deployments, including L2 and L3 fabrics, BGP and EVPN/VXLAN designs, RoCEv2 and QoS policy.
  • Build and operate validation environments for switch qualification, interoperability testing, performance characterization, and customer issue reproduction.
  • Evaluate new switches, network operating systems, and NICs from vendors like NVIDIA, Arista, Cisco, and Juniper, collaborating with vendor engineering teams.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex network issues across GPUs, fabric, and storage, addressing congestion, packet loss, MTU, latency, PFC, and ECN behavior.
  • Translate findings into documented best practices, automation, and input for R&D to improve the VAST platform.

Requirements

  • Strong data center networking fundamentals, equivalent to CCNP level or hands-on experience.
  • Proficiency in BGP and L3 routing, including eBGP/iBGP, ECMP, route policy, multipath, and BGP-based fabrics.
  • Hands-on experience designing and troubleshooting both L2 and L3 data center networks.
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot across layers, including routing, ARP/ND, MTU, congestion, packet loss, and latency.
  • Working knowledge of Linux networking, including interfaces, VLANs, routing tables, namespaces, and MTU.
  • Comfort using diagnostic tools such as tcpdump, Wireshark, and iperf.
  • A proactive approach to building labs and reproducing problems.
  • Excellent technical writing skills for clear documentation of designs and findings.
