About the Role
Phenix Space is building the upgradeable space layer for Earth’s critical industries, enabling evolution in orbit through robotic systems and standard interfaces. We are seeking a curious software engineer who thinks in systems and gets things done, writing software that controls our systems and understanding the hardware it drives. You will collaborate with all company functions, including hardware, electronics, robotics, GNC, simulation, and the founders.
Responsibilities
- Develop flight software for robot control, reasoning, task logic, telemetry, fault management, safe modes, and recovery.
- Implement real-time control loops for actuators and sensors, including sensor fusion.
- Package, deploy, and test software on robotic systems.
- Create embedded and low-level software, including firmware, drivers, hardware abstraction layers, and real-time buses (EtherCAT, CAN).
- Develop software for space-constrained compute environments considering power, thermal, and radiation limits.
- Drive system architecture and own features end-to-end, from requirements and interfaces through hardware and flight.
- Integrate software with hardware in collaboration with electronics, robotics, and GNC engineers.
- Conduct testing from simulation and hardware-in-the-loop to bench, environmental test, and flight, iterating based on results.
- Collaborate closely with hardware owners to rapidly test new capabilities.
Requirements
- B.S., M.S., or PhD in computer science, electrical, computer, aerospace, or mechanical engineering, mechatronics, or equivalent experience.
- 3+ years of experience writing production software for physical systems (spacecraft, robots, drones, vehicles, or similar).
- Proficiency in C or C++ for real-time and safety-critical systems, including embedded firmware on microcontrollers.
- Proficiency in Python.
- Experience with low-level communication protocols such as EtherCAT, CAN, SPI, I2C, and UART.
- Systems thinking: understanding of hardware driven by code and inter-subsystem dependencies.
- Experience shipping and deploying software to hardware that operated outside a lab environment.
- Deep curiosity, a can-do attitude, and a willingness to dive deep into any layer of the stack.
- U.S. person status required for export control (ITAR/EAR).
