About the Role

Atlassian is seeking an Engineering Leader to join the Data Engineering team, focusing on data governance and enterprise context to ensure data is trusted and AI-ready. The role involves owning the enterprise data governance operating model and shaping the technical strategy for data catalog, metadata, and lineage platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Own the enterprise data governance operating model, including domain ownership, decision rights, the governance council, and the steward network.
  • Set policy for data classification, access, retention, and acceptable use in collaboration with Privacy, Legal, Security, and Compliance.
  • Run data quality as a product.
  • Shape the technical strategy and architecture for the data catalog, metadata, and lineage platform.
  • Build enterprise context connecting business entities to ownership, lineage, and quality signals, exposed programmatically for agent and application consumption.
  • Shift governance left into data contracts, automated classification at ingest, and policy-as-code.
  • Define AI readiness as a certifiable state to gate data usage by models and agents.
  • Drive adoption of governance practices across a federated organization.
  • Implement DevOps best practices within the data platform, including CI/CD, data observability, monitoring, and lineage.
  • Build services and RESTful APIs, exposing metadata or platform capability programmatically for machine consumption.
  • Develop influential relationships and trust with senior leaders across departments.
  • Drive voluntary adoption from data producers who do not report to the role.
  • Partner with Analytics, Data Science, Engineering, Security, Privacy, Legal, and Product Management teams.

Requirements

  • 15+ years of experience in data engineering, data platform, or data management, with a focus on data strategy, architecture, governance, and platform buildout.
  • 8+ years of experience leading data engineering teams, including senior and principal-level architects and influencing teams outside of direct reporting lines.
  • Demonstrated experience standing up or scaling an enterprise data catalog or metadata platform (e.g., DataHub, Unity Catalog), owning integration, adoption, and outcome metrics.
  • Demonstrated experience owning a data governance operating model end to end, including policy, domain ownership, stewardship, classification, data quality, and controls.
  • Experience with a data-as-a-product or data contracts operating model.
  • Experience building a semantic layer, ontology, or knowledge graph for machine consumption, including agent-facing metadata access.
  • Experience across corporate data domains (Finance, People, GTM) and customer or product data, understanding their differing risk profiles.
  • Working fluency in privacy and regulatory requirements (GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, SOX, SOC 2) and practical command of classification schemes, access control models, masking, tokenization, and purpose limitation.
  • Technical depth in SQL, modern lakehouse platforms (Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery), transformation tooling (dbt), orchestration, and streaming/CDC patterns.
  • Experience implementing DevOps best practices within the data platform.
  • Experience building services and RESTful APIs.
  • Demonstrated experience developing influential relationships and trust with senior leaders.
  • Prior experience partnering with Analytics, Data Science, Engineering, Security, Privacy, Legal, and Product Management teams.
