About the Role

Altana is seeking a Senior Staff Machine Learning Engineer to lead the AI development for Altana Nexus, our agentic platform for global trade. This role involves working with diverse trade data to build models and AI agents that provide real-time risk, compliance, and enforcement decisions for governments and large corporations.

Responsibilities

Drive technical direction for agentic systems, defining architecture and roadmap for models processing trade data.
Build the pipeline from ingestion to decision, designing systems for data ingestion, document understanding, entity resolution, inference, and routing.
Adapt models to trade data using analyst feedback and production outcomes for fine-tuning and post-training.
Design the observability and feedback stack, including evaluations, tracing, and feedback loops.
Lead beyond the team by mentoring senior engineers and raising the technical bar.
Shape the product and business by collaborating with cross-functional teams and customers.
Generate new business ideas and translate ambiguous problems into shipped capabilities.

Requirements

BS/MS in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or related field, or equivalent experience.
10+ years of experience building and shipping ML systems in production.
Proven track record of delivering product-oriented ML solutions, including recent work on LLM-powered products.
Deep expertise in PyTorch and the modern Python ML stack (Hugging Face, scikit-learn, NumPy, Pandas/Polars).
Hands-on experience building production LLM applications: retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), tool/function calling, structured outputs, and agentic workflows.
Shipped agentic systems in production, understanding their failure modes (tool use, planning, state, recovery, human-in-the-loop).
Experience post-training or adapting LLMs (SFT, DPO, RLHF/RLAIF, reward modeling) for production use cases.
Rigorous approach to evaluation, including building eval suites, golden datasets, and LLM-as-judge pipelines.
Sound judgment on selecting models (API, fine-tuned, classical) based on cost, latency, and accuracy.
Senior Staff-level technical leadership: setting architecture direction, mentoring engineers, and creating roadmaps from ambiguous problems.
Passion for applying SOTA techniques to real-world problems, with a willingness to work with data and domain specifics for measurable outcomes.
Commitment to engineering excellence, supportability, and knowledge-sharing.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Proficiency with AI coding tools (Cursor, Claude Code).
