About the Role
Altana is seeking an Engineering Manager to build and lead a team focused on creating an AI-powered product network that enhances global trade security and resilience. This role involves embedding with product and design, driving product development from customer needs to shipped solutions, and owning team hiring, growth, and performance.
Responsibilities
- Build and develop the team, aligning individual career goals with project work.
- Foster close customer relationships by participating in calls and reviewing customer interactions.
- Ensure engineers understand customer problems by involving them in customer-facing activities.
- Partner with product and design to define problems and ensure solutions are evidence-based.
- Contribute code, understand domain architecture and technical debt, and set quality standards.
- Build AI-native systems using LLMs, agents, evals, and retrieval, and establish standards for AI-assisted code verification.
- Implement a planning process that results in realistic plans and early risk identification.
- Improve team velocity by identifying and removing bottlenecks using engineering metrics.
- Manage operational aspects including incidents, on-call responsibilities, system cost, and security.
- Create a team culture that embraces ambiguity and psychological safety for idea sharing.
Requirements
- Real-world professional experience writing back-end or data-driven software in demanding environments.
- Strong hands-on engineering skills, including deploying production code to cloud environments.
- Demonstrated experience working on large, complex problems.
- Experience leading a team, either as an engineering manager or a tech lead with people management responsibilities (coaching, feedback, hiring).
- A track record of understanding customer problems, scoping work, and delivering incremental releases from prototype to production.
- Experience managing planning and delivery for a team that consistently meets commitments.
- Comfort with owning operations, including incidents, on-call, and system cost.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Good judgment regarding task escalation and self-management.
