About the Role

Build and own major components of the headset side of Walden's teleoperation system, an immersive OpenXR application for controlling humanoid robots. This generalist VR engineering role focuses on graphics, covering the OpenXR stack, tracking, input, and frame timing, with an emphasis on delivering pixels to the display. You will address challenges like camera-robot misalignment and frame latency using prediction, reprojection, and compositing, driven by measurement to improve latency, power consumption, framerate, and resolution. You will join a small, hands-on teleoperation team focused on a shared architecture and latency budget, thriving on quick iteration from concept to prototype.

Responsibilities

  • Build, maintain, and improve the core of the operator application, including the frame loop, streaming client, rendering, and platform layer.
  • Evolve the application architecture as the product matures and debug issues in real deployments.
  • Adapt headset runtime tracking (head, hand, controller) through OpenXR for the full loop from operator motion to robot control and back to display.
  • Implement haptic feedback for the operator.
  • Implement pose prediction, frame timing, reprojection, and compositing to ensure a stable and responsive operator view despite network and rendering delays.
  • Profile and optimize rendering on Snapdragon-based XR headsets, focusing on tile-based rendering and foveation to maintain framerate with minimal power consumption.
  • Instrument latency, power, framerate, and GPU cost, using data to optimize performance.
  • Ensure application compatibility across various headsets (e.g., Meta, Android XR, Pico, Steam) and support new headset integrations.
  • Collaborate with robot-side teleoperation, networking, and UX engineers to define interfaces and implement features end-to-end.

Requirements

  • Shipped real-time graphics or XR software in production.
  • Working knowledge of compositors, timewarp, and frame pacing, or the ability to quickly acquire this knowledge.
  • Deep, practical command of projective geometry, homographies, camera models, coordinate frames, SE(3) transforms, quaternions, and pose tracking.
  • Strong Vulkan or OpenGL ES and shader experience, including profiling and optimizing rendering for mobile GPUs (bandwidth, overdraw, power).
  • Comfort working across the OpenXR stack and VR application code (sessions, spaces, tracking, swapchains, composition layers).
  • Strong modern C++ skills for real-time paths and Python for tooling.
  • Track record of turning fast prototypes into reliable software.
  • Demonstrated use of AI coding tools (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot) to increase productivity, with the judgment to review, test, and own AI-generated code.
  • Comfort implementing features with robotics, controls, and networking engineers that span both headset and robot.
  • Demonstrated ability to take features from design through deployment and field validation with minimal supervision.
