About the Role

CarGurus' Conversion team is seeking a Software Development Engineer II (Backend) to enhance dealer lead conversion. This role involves working with Java and Spring Boot services to enrich leads, process event streams, and serve APIs for dealer dashboards, offering significant ownership and collaboration opportunities.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and ship features in Java and Spring Boot services that enrich leads and power dealer insights.
  • Own work from technical design through testing, code review, and production.
  • Work with high-volume event streams and data (Kafka, MongoDB, Redis) to maintain fresh shopper data and fast APIs.
  • Build intelligence features, including LLM-backed ones, to recommend dealer actions.
  • Diagnose and fix production issues, participate in on-call rotation, and improve alerting and observability.
  • Partner with product and design to break down ambiguous problems into shippable work.
  • Help improve testing, deployment, and operational practices for owned services.

Requirements

  • 2-4 years of hands-on software development experience in a professional setting.
  • Proficiency in Java, ideally with Spring Boot.
  • Solid working knowledge of MongoDB or another NoSQL datastore, and comfort with SQL.
  • Practical understanding of RESTful API design, microservices, and distributed systems.
  • Experience with event streams or message queues (Kafka, SQS, or similar) and caching trade-offs.
  • Hands-on experience with AWS and cloud infrastructure.
  • Strong understanding of data structures, algorithms, and complexity analysis.
  • Habit of writing automated tests and understanding test requirements.
  • Experience or interest in leveraging AI coding tools (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor).
  • Clear communication, curiosity, and a bias toward shipping.
  • Genuine interest in learning the dealer domain.
