About the Role
Alto is actively involved in transforming Canada's future through its high-speed rail project connecting Quebec City and Toronto. This innovative initiative aims to improve citizens' quality of life, strengthen community ties, and stimulate economic growth. We are seeking a Financial Information Advisor to take on a leading role in preparing financial statements and conducting technical accounting analyses in accordance with Canadian Public Sector Accounting Standards (PSAS). This role is ideal for a CPA with strong financial reporting experience who wants to own key deliverables within a growing federal Crown corporation, contributing to accounting policies, processes, and financial reporting practices that will support one of Canada's largest infrastructure projects.
Responsibilities
- Prepare Alto's monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting deliverables, including financial statements, notes, and supporting schedules, in accordance with PSAS.
- Prepare quarterly financial reports and contribute to the financial sections of the annual report, adhering to financial reporting requirements for federal Crown corporations.
- Maintain the financial close calendar, master schedules, and reconciliation files, ensuring all figures and information are fully supported.
- Prepare and review balance sheet account reconciliations, account analyses, and variance analyses; review and explain significant variances.
- Prepare supporting schedules and reports for key areas such as government funding, major project expenditures, capital assets and work in progress, contractual obligations, and related party transactions, in collaboration with the capital and cost control teams.
- Prepare internal financial information packages and analyses to support materials for the Board of Directors, Audit Committee, and senior management.
- Research accounting matters and prepare technical memos and position papers on new, complex, or unusual transactions for review by the Manager, Financial Information, and the Director, Corporate Accounting.
- Assess the impact of new standards and amendments to PSAS, including the revised Conceptual Framework and Section PS 1202, Presentation of Financial Statements, and support their implementation.
- Contribute to the development and updating of Alto's accounting policies and procedures as the organization and project evolve.
- Advise project, procurement, and finance teams on the accounting treatment for contracts, capital expenditures, and financing arrangements.
- Support the Manager in coordinating year-end and interim audits: manage routine auditor requests, prepare audit-ready work papers, and assist in resolving audit findings.
- Perform and document financial reporting review controls, in collaboration with the internal controls team, and recommend improvements.
- Support the preparation of tax deliverables.
- Enhance financial reporting templates, processes, and tools to improve information accuracy and reduce turnaround times.
- Collaborate with Financial Planning and Analysis (FP&A), Cost Control, Internal Controls, Capital, and Procurement teams, as well as project stakeholders, to gather information for reporting and resolve accounting issues.
- Provide guidance to analysts and perform a first level of review of their work as the team expands, and backfill for the Manager on financial reporting deliverables as needed.
- Support ad-hoc analyses and special projects as Alto continues to grow.
Requirements
- CPA designation.
- 5 to 7 years of progressive experience in financial reporting, public accounting (assurance), or a combination thereof.
- Hands-on experience preparing full-cycle financial statements and related notes.
- Experience with PSAS is preferred; candidates with strong IFRS experience and the technical skills to transition to PSAS will also be considered.
- Demonstrated ability to research accounting standards and write clear, rigorous, and well-supported technical memos.
- Experience coordinating or supporting external audits.
- Advanced proficiency in Excel and experience with an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system; experience with SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition is an asset.
- Experience in government, a Crown corporation, or the infrastructure, transportation, construction, or major capital projects sectors is an asset.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain accounting matters to non-finance professionals.
- High attention to detail, good judgment, and strong documentation skills, along with the ability to manage competing deadlines in a dynamic, high-scrutiny environment.
- Bilingualism (French and English) is an asset.
